[Audio] Morocco and Western Sahara is an ongoing controversy related to the colonial past, the misunderstanding, fights and wars that is traced back to the colonial times. This fight is as a result of Western Sahara fighting for their own independence from Morocco Kingdom who owns the administrative power over Western Sahara..

[Audio] Western Sahara is located on the northwest coast of West Africa. Morocco controls eighty percent of Western Sahara while Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic controls 20 percent. It is one of the mostly sparsely populated countries in the world. It has an estimated population of 500,00 and forty percent of this population live in Laayoune, the largest city in Western Africa..
[Audio] Western Sahara was colonized by Spain in 1884 and they established Polisario in 1973. In 1974, Morocco asked the international court of Justice to decide its claims of sovereignty over Spanish Sahara, and Mauritania later joined them in this claim. The international court of Justice issued an advisory opinion, ruling in favor of the right to self-determination of the Sahrawi people. Francisco the Spanish leader was dying and, therefore, they left the country Morocco and Mauritania won the case but Mauritania withdrew in 1979. Since then, Morocco occupies 80% of Western Sahara..

Morocco also generates a one billion dollar income from Western Sahara mines and also the fishing activities from the shores of the Sahara..

On one hand it is claimed by Morocco on the other hand it is claimed a rebel national liberation movement know as the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. This union is recognized by the world ,who are fighting for the independence of the country. 80% of the land is control by the Morocco, including the coastline and natural resources of the area..

Due to trade growth in the region, it was used as the major route for caravans that mainly operated between Tombouctou and Marrakesh in Mali. Spanish major interest of colonizing Western Sahara was to use it as their main route for channeling slave trade but their stay continued to grow in the 1700 where they used it as route for commercial fishing..
