Physical Barriers 9/29/25 Examples: Other users cannot press the small buttons with their weak motor skills. Individuals who are in wheelchairs can be unable to hold or place devices. The difficulties of the posture and strength may make the usage of the AAC devices exhausting. Strategies: Hands-free communication by use of eye-tracking systems and head pointers. Give alternatives of switches or touch inputs. Install flexi stands/mounts to support the device. Image Ideas: AAC mounted on the wheelchair of a user. Technology- Eye-tracking. Explanation: A patient can be physically restricted and therefore unable to be equipped to use his AAC resources. Technological Barriers 9/29/25 Examples: There are too many AAC devices that are complex or incomprehensible. The vocabulary used or the software in use can be restrictive in communication. You are interrupted with such device failures as low battery or malfunctioning software. Strategies: Select easy and convenient devices. Modify devices to include own language and functionality. Social Barriers 9/29/25 Examples: There are those users who are embarrassed or even stigmatized by the use of AAC in the society. Friends, teachers or family may be unaccustomed to communicating with AAC users. They can keep the user lonely or excluded by society. Strategies: Train families, peers and teachers to effectively communicate with AAC users. Begin campaigns in order to build awareness to alleviate the stigma. Financial 9/29/25 Examples: AAC devices are sold at thousands of dollars. Maintenance, repair and upgrading is costly. AAC devices are not covered in many insurance programs. Strategies: Get government funding, insurance or grants. Use free/low cost AAC applications in the tablet or smartphones. Making shared devices at schools, clinics or by using community centers.
