The nurse advises the patient that the prescription will be left behind reception to collect. The patient advises they are unable to collect today due to work commitments. The nurse looks at the patients address and sees that they pass the location on their way home. The nurse kindly offers to take the prescription to the pharmacy for them and bring the antibiotics to their house in the evening..

Candour has been defined by the Professional Standards Authority as  “being open and transparent when something has gone wrong”.  Currently, nurses are affected by both professional and statutory duties of candour.

Failure to comply with these principles could lead to Fitness to Practice processes against registered DCP’s.

It sets out some specific requirements providers must follow when things go wrong with care and treatment, including informing people about the incident, providing reasonable support, providing truthful information and an apology when things go wrong.

What is a chaperone?. Cultural factors should be considered, particularly when examinations are performed by members of the opposite sex. Also, any consultations where patients may feel vulnerable. Where chaperones are not available, the appointment should be rearranged..

Language Use simple words; avoid jargon and acronyms. Limit/avoid technical language Speed Speak slowly (don’t shout). Articulate Pronounce words completely. Repeat Repeat important information. Resources Provide educational material in the languages your patients read. Use pictures, demonstrations, video or audiotapes to increase understanding Information Give information in small chunks and verify comprehension before going on. Confirm Always confirm patient’s understanding of the information - patient’s logic may be different from yours.

All patients are unique and the cause of their anxiety and fear will be personal to them. Recognising this and putting in place supportive strategies is an important part of the relationship between the patient and DCP. The patient may be frightened and anxious about what is happening to them, the treatment they are about to receive, or the prognosis.

Giving patients the time to talk and express their feelings and anxiety is one key strategy. Patients need to feel that the DCP has the time to listen to them, that their concerns and worries are being considered and addressed.

How to handle communication barriers. Here are some reasons why: There should be no contact with staff or other patients who are rubella (German measles) or (Herpes Varicella) contacts. These viruses are potentially deadly to a fetus . LA is safe but general anaesthesia and drugs of any other kind should be avoided, including sedatives and analgesics. In the late stages of pregnancy, patients should not be treated in the supine position as they are likely to be extremely uncomfortable – major blood vessel can be crushed by the womb. Radiographs should be avoided, particularly during the first and third trimester Often, clinicians will postpone treatment until baby is born, unless it’s causing the patient pain ..
