FOUNDATIONAL UNDERSTANDING. What is the Gospel?. The Meaning of "Gospel". 

Scene 3

The word "gospel" comes from the Greek euaggélion, meaning "good news." In the first-century Roman Empire, this term was used to announce regime changes at the highest level of government—imperial decrees that would affect every citizen.

When Jesus proclaimed His euaggélion, He made an astounding claim: the Kingdom of God has arrived, and He is its King.

"The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe the gospel."

Jesus' gospel was not primarily about how to get to heaven, but that the Reign of Heaven had come to invade Earth. It was a royal summons for all to come under His benevolent rule.

The gospel is not just about personal benefits—it's about recognizing Jesus as the rightful King and surrendering to His reign.

THE PROBLEM. The Human Condition: Separated from God. 

Scene 4

The Bible teaches that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Sin is not merely breaking rules—it is a condition of the heart that separates us from our Creator.

• Passive indifference to God's purposes

• Self-will that prefers our way over God's

Humanity was created for intimate fellowship with God, but sin created a great gulf between us. "The wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23)—not just physical death, but spiritual separation from God.

No amount of good works, religious activity, or moral effort can restore the relationship we broke.

Understanding the seriousness of our condition helps us appreciate the magnitude of God's solution. We must recognize the problem before we can embrace the cure.

God's Love is.... Unconditional. Sacrificial. Unmerited. 

Scene 5

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."

God's love is not a feeling—it's an action. While we were still sinners, God took the initiative to provide salvation. He did not wait for us to clean ourselves up or become worthy.

"I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." — John 10:10

God's plan is not merely to forgive sins and take us to heaven. He wants to restore us to the abundant life we were created for—a life of purpose, peace, joy, and intimate relationship with Him.

Key Truth: Salvation begins with God's love, not human merit. We cannot earn it, but we can receive it by faith.

THE SOLUTION. Jesus Christ: God's Only Provision. 

Scene 6

Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God who became human. He is fully God and fully man—the only person who could bridge the infinite gap between a holy God and sinful humanity.

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Jesus does not claim to be a way—He claims to be the only way. This is not arrogance but reality: only God incarnate could accomplish what was necessary for salvation.

Jesus is not one option among many—He is God's unique provision. This exclusivity is rooted in who He is (God incarnate) and what He accomplished (atonement for sin).

THE CROSS. The Atonement: Christ Died for Our Sins. 

Scene 7

"For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures."

The death of Christ on the cross is the heart of the gospel. He died in our place, taking the punishment we deserved, so that we could be forgiven and reconciled to God.

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." — Romans 5:8

The cross is the ultimate demonstration of God's love. He did not wait for us to become worthy—He acted while we were still His enemies.

Propitiation: Satisfied God's justice and wrath against sin

Redemption: Paid the price to free us from sin's penalty

Reconciliation: Restored relationship between God and humanity

VICTORY OVER DEATH. The Resurrection: Victory Over Death. 

Scene 8

On the third day after His crucifixion, Jesus rose from the dead. The tomb was empty, and He appeared to hundreds of eyewitnesses over forty days (1 Corinthians 15:3-8).

The resurrection is not a myth or metaphor—it is historical reality attested by multiple witnesses and transformed lives.

Validates Jesus' Identity: Proves He is the Son of God and Messiah

Confirms Acceptance: Shows God accepted Christ's sacrifice

Demonstrates Power: Proves God has power over death

Guarantees Our Future: We too will be resurrected

"And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith... But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep."

Without the resurrection, Christianity collapses. With the resurrection, we have living hope—not just for this life, but for eternity.

Jesus is called "the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep" (1 Corinthians 15:20). Just as the firstfruits guarantee the full harvest, Jesus' resurrection guarantees ours. Death is not the end for believers.

The Kingdom is.... God's Rule and Reign. Present and Future. 

Scene 9

The Kingdom of God is God's active rule and reign over all creation. It is not merely a future hope but a present reality that Jesus inaugurated.

"The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed... for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you." — Luke 17:20-21

"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

To seek the Kingdom means to prioritize God's rule in every area of life—making decisions that align with His will, cultivating spiritual disciplines, and living under His authority.

Important: The Kingdom is not about escaping earth to go to heaven—it's about heaven coming to earth, transforming lives and communities now.

THE HUMAN RESPONSE. Response: Repentance and Faith. 

Scene 10

The Greek word for repentance (metanoia) means "to change one's mind." It involves turning from rejection of Christ to faith in Christ.

Repentance is not a work that earns salvation—it is God's gift that enables us to turn to Him (Acts 5:31; 11:18).

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."

Faith is trusting in Christ alone for salvation—not in our own goodness, religious activities, or moral efforts. It is receiving the gift of grace.

Repentance and faith are two perspectives on the same response:

You cannot truly place faith in Christ without first changing your mind about your sin and about who Jesus is.

We receive Christ by personal invitation—turning to God from self (repentance) and trusting Christ to forgive our sins and make us what He wants us to be.

OUR MISSION. The Great Commission: Sharing the Gospel. 

Scene 11

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."

The Great Commission is not optional—it is Jesus' command to every believer. We are called to participate in God's mission to reach every people group with the gospel.

"And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

We do not go alone. Jesus promises His presence with every believer who obeys His command to make disciples.

The Great Commission is not just for missionaries—it's for every disciple of Jesus. Each of us has a role in God's global mission.

The gospel is not just information—it's an invitation to a transformed life under the reign of King Jesus. It is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes."
