What is teamwork and why are teams essential to success? What makes a successful team?

TEAM : A  group of individuals working together to achieve a common goal. T eamwork :  The ability of people to provide complementary skills, a willingness to share knowledge and skills and assist other team members to achieve a common goal Effective teamwork : All team members having a sound knowledge of their job and responsibilities as well as those of other team members.

Scene 4

The process of learning to work together effectively is known as  team development .  Research has shown that teams go through definitive stages during development.  Bruce Tuckman, an educational psychologist, identified a five-stage development process that most teams follow to become high performing.  He called the stages:  forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning.

Determining individual roles Develop trust and communication Develop norms Task Define problems and strategy Identify information needed

During this stage, team members: Realize tat the task is more difficult than they imagined Have fluctuation in attitude about chances of success May be resistant to the task Have poor collaboration

Members accept: Their team Team rules and procedures Their roles in the team The individuality of fellow members That they are not going to crash-and-burn and start helping each other

Team members have: Gained insight into personal and team processes A better understanding of each other’s strengths and weaknesses Gained the ability to prevent or work through group conflict and resolve differences Develop a close attachment to the team Commitment to shared goals

Scene 9

During this stage: It is important to achieve closure for the group on a positive note. It is therefore important to recognize the group members for their accomplishments and celebrate the group’s overall success.

Divide into groups (can also be done individually) Write the word TEAMWORK vertically on a piece of paper  Choose a word that starts with each letter of the word TEAMWORK which describes what makes a successful team  Present your findings and explain the reasoning behind each word

T - Talents i.e., skills and abilities E - Enthusiasm i.e., shared excitement and interest A – Adaptable i.e., flexibility is key to face unforeseen 	roadblocks M - Mutual respect i.e., valuing everyone’s contributions  W - Working Together i.e., common purpose to deliver results O - Organized i.e., clear structure, expectations, roles, etc. R - Recognition i.e., continuous feedback K - Knowledge i.e., having the required knowledge to achieve the 	common purpose

Team leaders should be able to identify and effectively deal with cultural differences. They  must understand the need for: Tolerance and respecting differences Adopting a sensitive approach when dealing with another point of view Constructively raising and discussing issues

Participating in staff training Adopting a professional attitude Using staff cultural skills to enhance awareness Using a variety of different communication media Promoting cultural celebrations Celebrating differences Developing a tolerance of cultural difference Actively seeking to break down barriers

As each goose flaps its wings it creates an "uplift" for the birds that follow. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone. Lesson:  People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

Scene 24

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it. Lesson:  If we have as much sense as a goose, we stay in formation with those headed where we want to go. We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.

Scene 25

When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into formation and another goose flies to the point position. Lesson:  It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership. As with geese, people are interdependent on each other's skills, capabilities and unique arrangements of gifts, talents or resources.

Scene 26

The geese flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. Lesson:  We need to make sure our honking is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater. The power of encouragement is the quality of honking we seek.

Scene 27

When a goose gets sick, wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it to help and protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock. Lesson:   Stand  by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.

Individuals who share a common direction can achieve their goals quicker and easier  Accepting others’ help and support and extending your help and support to others A team is interdependent on each others skills, capabilities, talents and resources  Constant encouragement and feedback are key to achieving results Standing by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong
