What is Syphilis?. Bacterial Infection: Treponema pallidum. It is a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Syphilis has 4 stages of development. Symptoms: skin rash, fever, sores (mouth or genital areas), swollen lymph nodes, fever. Prevention: Avoiding sexual contact, practicing safe sex methods (condoms), regular STI check ups.
