What IS  Trauma   ? And how does it apply to a family

Emotional and psychological trauma is the result of extremely stressful events that are shattering to your sense of security, which may make you feel helpless(Robinson, 2021).  Examples of traumas that families may experience are : Death of a loved one Financial hardships  Divorce  Abusive households  Drama and arguments  Physical fighting etc .

What is coping and how do people cope with Trauma  ?

Coping is  the Use  behavioral and cognitive ways to mitigate the pressures of a situation where they are assessed as taxing or exceeding somebody's resources, or to reduce negative emotions and conflict caused by  stress(apa.org, 2020). Examples of good coping methods towards family traumas are : By making sure your family and you feel loved and cared for , during and after a traumatic experience. Maintain routines , it’s vital to maintain routines like family dinners , family fun time , bed times , and discussions as much as possible. By sharing information , and talking about what the family may be going through , for example if there is a financial hardship it’s important to talk to children and teens of the family about it, instead of chastising. By understanding that people and family cope in different ways , some may spend more time with others , some may isolate, some may want to have fun more .

When we lose a loved family member one we go through go  through  Kübler -Ross’s Five stages of Grief Model:  which include ; denial , anger, depression and acceptance  Depression- In this stage a depression is expected when you lose a family member psychiatrist/psychologist may deem it as normal , however if not coped with in the right way through: Over isolating  Not eating to an excessive point  staying in bed for an extreme period of time for  e.g  months  ETC  These ineffective coping can  evolve into a major clinical depression , so it is important to see a health care professional to ascertain whether this depression is normal or abnormal for the stage. one  of the most stressful impacts of life on a child or family is divorce  especially with   children, helping children cope through a divorce is a beneficial to them . children , may feel upset , angry and shocked at divorces , some may even blame themselves for the separation of their parents (Wallace, 2021).  Examples of ineffective coping with children in divorce matters include : Involving them in heated discussions and legal talk about custody . Upsetting their daily routines.  Parents becoming uninvolved with their children's lives. Not offering support or comfort to them , during the times of the divorce By not assuring them that things will be okay. Families often go through financial struggles to provide for themselves , parents may be  layed  off of jobs , the sudden death of parent forces one to struggle , or poverty in general . Often this causes major trauma and stress.  Ineffective ways to cope with this are : Parents chastising children and teens about eating and spending  Parents taking out their frustration on children and teens  Arguing with spouses about who’s fault it is Not talking to children or spouses about what is causing the financial hardships. Refusing to cut back in the hopes of things getting better.

Ineffective coping of financial hardships within a family may lead to

Insomnia ( in children or parents ) Anxiety ( in children or parents ) Relationship issues ( in children and teens ) Social withdrawals  Depression  Personality disorders ( later on in children)  Aggression  ETC.
