The abortion debate is an ongoing controversy concerning the moral, philosophical, and ethical status of women having the right to terminate a pregnancy.

Even though abortion was made legal in the United States with the Roe v. Wade decision of 1973, there has been ongoing discussion on whether it should be allowed ever since. A woman has the absolute right to decide what to do with her own body (Manninen et al 2018). Abortion is a medical practice that is both safe and allowed. . Some may contend that abortion involves murder, but I find this to be untrue. A fetus does not possess the same rights as people since it is not a person otherwise it would have the same rights. Moreover, the reasons to get an abortion are just not because of an unwanted pregnancy. Abortion should be legal, fully funded, and accessible to all women because it is a fundamental right, it is not the place of the government to legislate against women's choices, it prevents child neglect, and a fetus is not legally or scientifically a person so abortion cannot be equated to murder..

Moreover, the reasons to get an abortion are just not because of an unwanted pregnancy. A pregnant woman who terminate her pregnancies rather than carrying their pregnancies to term are at a lower risk of experiencing unfavorable health outcomes (Ngo et al 2011) Abortion is a medical procedure. The government has a duty to protect its citizens and it should not be dictating people what they can and cannot do with their bodies in the process.  Is it appropriate for the government to have a say in how a woman uses her body?  According to pro-choice advocates, women have the right to make their own decisions about their bodies, and the government should not be able to dictate what those choices are.

Although there could be strong arguments against legalizing abortion, it's vital to also consider the health of the women that are the one concerned with carrying the pregnancy.

Legalizing abortion would offer women a haven to make the best choice for themselves and for the fetus they’re carrying. You’re not the one carrying the pregnancy, so you should not be concerned with what another person will do unless you decide to take care of the baby when he/she is born. If a fetus is a human being and there’s no other way around it, it is time to claim it on taxes and give it the same rights as me.
