On successful completion of this module you will be able to: Critically appraise some of the social and psychological barriers which shape human development and wellbeing. You will be able to evaluate knowledge of risk factors and protective factors for human development and wellbeing. You will be able to critically reflect upon your own life and development, and the way in which your experiences have shaped the way you respond to stressful situations. You will be able to demonstrate depth of knowledge of relevant legislation underpinning social work and social care provision. You will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of the processes involved in the application of social work law. You will be able to critically analyse the tensions between protection and control when balancing the rights and responsibilities of social work practice within a legal framework..

[Audio] The first part of the module will explore some of the social and psychological barriers which shape human development and wellbeing. You will explore risk and protective factors, and how these relate to human development..

[Audio] The second part of the module looks at the legal framework in which social work operates. In England, the legal framework often separates legislation relating to children, and legislation relating to adults, and this is reflected in the module. The 'adult' law focuses on key pieces of legislation such as the Care Act and the Mental Capacity Act. The module adopts a critical approach, considering ethical and legal tensions inherent in operating within the legal framework..

[Audio] Legislation relating to children is often underpinned by the Children Act 1989. This is not the only piece of legislation relating to social work with children, but it is a key piece of legislation for social workers, and this will be covered in this module, alongside other accompanying laws, policies, and guidance to help you develop a critical understanding of your roles and responsibilities as a social worker..

[Audio] The written assignment will account for 50% of the marks for this module. It is a 1,500 word assignment based on a case study, which you will be provided with early in the module. The main learning outcomes this assignment relates to are shown above..

[Audio] The exam will take place in May 2024. The University exams team sets the date for this, and will let you know the arrangements nearer to the time. The exam counts for 50% of the module. The exam will be a timed 3-hour assessment. It will be based on case studies, which you will receive at the time of the exam..
