Magic Realism- Playwrights (Grade III -VIII) Magic realism is a genre of literature that portrays the real mundane world with undertones of fantasy and magic. The story is still set in a real world setting with relatable characters but also has wondrous elements that are considered as something normal in this world. It constantly blurs the line between fantasy and reality but is different from fairy tales. Learning Outcome- By giving children an opportunity to entwine the mundane with the fantastic, Magic realism encourages imagination as well as direct/indirect social commentary. Children can draw on elements of myths and fairy tales and add them to the ordinary real-life settings, thereby, creating magical worlds that the readers will then reconstruct as per their understanding. Immersion in a scenario where they need to think about impossible events and those that challenge their understanding of the world will engage children’s deeper processing, precisely because they can’t treat these scenarios as they would treat others. It pushes them to look at every event with a fresh set of eyes, asking whether it fits the laws of reality or with the world of the story. This constant need to evaluate a story might make these situations particularly ripe for learning..
