Salman, M, 12 yrs

Meena, F, 7 yrs

Raju, M, 9 yrs

Some examples of children and their circumstances

Salman, 12 yrs , ran away from his parents home in eastern UP 5 years back and now lives with other boys like him, in a shared makeshift room near New Delhi Railway station. He escaped from an abusive and alcoholic father and does not ever want to go back home. He needs to work for his survival. He takes up any opportunity that comes up- he has cleaned dishes at a small dhabba , sold peanuts, done shoe shining and even been an errand boy once to a druck driver who delivers stuff between Amritsar and Delhi . When he doesn’t earn enough or is unwell to go to work he goes to a nearby gurudwara or dargah for a free meal. Police beats up Salman & boys like him often and the little protection he gets sometimes from an older peer is mostly against sexual favours.

Meena, 7, lives with her homeless parents and 4 younger siblings near a canal flowing through the city of Chennai. They came here 8 yrs back from a small place called Alangudi . They have a makeshift hut with a plastic sheet as a roof. Meena’s father is disabled and the family survives by begging. The entire family walks long distances for begging. Meena has polio in her right leg and finds it difficult to walk all the way where her parents go for begging. Both her parents take alcohol and drugs and have several diseases.

Raju, 9, lives with his 2 elder sisters, younger brother and his widowed mother in a very highly populated slum in Pune. They use the community toilet but have a small bathing space. His grandparents own a pucca house on the outskirts of the city. His mother takes up casual work as and when possible and his eldest sister works as a domestic worker nearby. Raju goes to a nearby government school and would like to have some support after school. In the neighbourhood many families brew and sell liquor. Many school dropped out boys take alcohol, sometimes drugs and engage in a lot of eve teasing . Sometimes Raju feels like running away from all these circumstances.

Scene 16 (4m 43s)

Sarita, F, 14 yrs

Fatima, F, 11 yrs

Peter, M, 13 yrs

Some examples of children and their circumstances

Sarita, 14, lives with her mother and step father and siblings in their own small house in Patna. Sarita is attending middle school and wants to join the police force. Her father is an alcoholic and does not have a stable job. Her mother runs the family single handedly . She has been working as a househelp with a family for many years who are very supportive and treat her well. The father is caring towards Sarita and her siblings most times but takes out his frustrations on his wife, often by beating her even in front of their children.

Fatima, 11, travels from the suburbs to the city streets to sell pens, flowers etc. She dropped out of school as her single mother struggled to make ends meet. She lives in a densely populated slum. During the day she buys food but takes back her earnings in the evening so that the family can have one square meal. Her mother is thinking of marrying her off in 2-3 years. There is an NGO near her house that offers education and vocational training to young girls who have dropped out from school. The Social Worker from there has been folowing up with Fatima and her mother to join.

Peter, 13, is very bright and creative boy living in Bangalore. His father is a taxi driver while his mother works as an assistant in a small clinic nearby. They live in a rented 3 room set house with their 2 children. Peter suffered a serious viral infection when he was 8 yrs and lost his vision partially. He loves sports but hardly gets the opportunity to participate so now he watches a lot of sports. He wants to join the civil services.
