Explanation: Inside each kernel of popcorn is a tiny drop of water surrounded by a hard shell called a hull. A drop of water is made up of tiny particles called atoms. When cold, these atoms are close together, but with heat, it becomes more active, so it needs more space to move around.

Explanation continues: As the popcorn is heated, the water turns into steam. The atoms in steam needs extra space to move around (when heat is added), so it builds pressure inside the kernel. When the hull can no longer contain the pressure, the kernel pops.

Conclusion: As the kernel heats up, the water inside it expands, building pressure against the hard surface. As it explodes, the soft starch inside the popcorn becomes inflated and bursts. The steam inside the kernel is released, and the popcorn is popped, hot and ready to eat.
