[Audio] Miller’s Early Years Kelly Miller was born on july 18th 1863 , In south carolina to parents that had experienced slavery. As a child growing up in the reconstruction era (the period after the Civil War when the United States worked to rebuild the South and grant rights to formerly enslaved African Americans.) He was seen as very academically gifted , especially in subjects such as math.
