Introduction. ResearchGate introduced in the year 2008 Its purpose is to connect geographically distant researchers and allow them to communicate continuously based on the open-world concept and the elimination of distance as an important factor in working relations. ResearchGate has been regarded as one of the most attractive academic social networking sites for the scientific community. It has been trying to improve user-centered interfaces to gain more attractiveness to scientists around the world..
Objectives. To know the percentage of LIS faculty members who created ResearchGate Profile. To know the number of documents uploaded by LIS faculty members to the ResearchGate Profile. To know the research productivity of LIS academics of various universities in South India. To know the number of citations as well as H index of LIS academics of various universities in South India.
Scope and limitations. The study aims to understand the Research Visibility of LIS academics as reflected in the ResearchGate database. Thus, this study is confined to only faculty members of the Library and Information Science discipline working in South Indian Universities. The permanent faculty members working in 29 universities are chosen for the study. The visiting professors, guest faculty and research scholars are not considered.
Methodology. The total numbers of faculty members working in 29 LIS departments of South Indian Universities are collected from the university websites. It is found that there are 106 permanent LIS faculty members working in 29 south Indian universities. The name of each faculty member was entered in the ResearchGate search option to know the number of faculty member who created the ResearcGate profile. It is found that out of 106 faculty members only 50 faculty created ReseachGate profile..
Findings. Of the 119 Universities, only 29 universities are offering LIS course in south India. Comparatively more number of Universities of Tamilnadu (37.5%) are offering LIS course followed by Karnataka (34.37%) and Andra Pradesh (18.6%). With respect to the number of LIS faculty members who created Researchgate profile, it is found that all LIS faculty member working LIS department of Tumkur University have created ResearchGate profile followed by Akkamahadevi Women’s University, Karnatak University, Allagappa University, Bharathidasan University and University of Calicut..
It is also found that more number of document are uploaded by the faculty members of LIS department of Bharathidasan University (236), Annamalai University(222) and Tumkur University(216). The LIS department of Bharathidasan University (33), Alagappa University (29) and Karnataka University (21) have more H index. The faculty members of Bharathidasan University have the highest number of Followers (266) followed by Tumkur University (254)..
Dr. S Thanuskodi has more RG score (17.71) followed by Dr. B.T. Sampath Kumar (16.47) and Dr. M. Sadik Basha (13.7). The articles of LIS faculty members of Alagappa University (974), Tumkur University (204) and Bharathidasan University (175) have more Recommendations..
No LIS faculty members working in the department of Library and Information Science in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Dravidian University, Andhra University, Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Sri Venkateswara University, Karanataka State Open University, Osmania University, Kakatiya University and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University created Researchgate profile..
Further it found that 54.5% of Professors, 50% of Asst. Professors and 33.3% of Associate Professors have created ResearchGate profile..
Recommendations. The LIS faculty members need to create the RessearchGate profile to enhance the research visibility. Apart from that the LIS faculty members also need to create their profile in all Academic Social Networking Sites. This will help them to share the research articles with the such platforms and they also may get more citations. The faculty members need to publish their scholarly content in peer reviewed journals to get more citations, h index and RGScore ..
In order to increase the RG score, the LIS faculty members need to share published articles, unpublished research, projects in the RG profile. If the articles are published in open access journals, the faculty members need to share the documents in the ResearchGate Profile. This will help the buddings researchers to make use of the articles uploaded by the faculty members. In turn, it will also help the LIS faculty members to increase the research visibility as well as h index..
Thank you.
