In a small village located in  Narukami , twins named  Quanti  and  Quali  lived together in solitude. Abandoned by their parents, from toddlers to young adults, they strive every day to make a living and only have each other to rely on. To support themselves, the twins resorted to Pickpocketing, which, according to  Quanti , "Makes more money than actual jobs in the street". Years of pickpocketing have passed, and they got skillful, agile, and athletic.  Quali  never liked how they lived their lives, but circumstances forced them to, and so she followed behind  Quanti , acting as his eyes in the operation, choosing which people she deems they are able to pickpocket from, while he directed their plan of action. Together, they made it work.

As usual, with a quick forehead kiss, the twins started their day with a silent promise, before parting and going in position.  Quanti  climbed up a roof while  Quali  hid away from her brother, far enough there wouldn’t be any suspicions, but close enough to still be in sight, acting as a lookout if anything went wrong.  Quanti  furrows his brows as he sees a lot of policemen patrolling the area, clicking his tongue and quickly forming a way on how to bypass them. Below,  Quali  glances towards her brother's whereabouts and figures that someone alerted the police, catching on to their act and looks on in worry that they’ll be caught.  Quali  knew that that day would eventually happen, and maybe– no, surely, some of the people they stole from were going to use their money for medicine or for a sick loved one staying in a hospital. Hence, the aching guilt that seemed to stack onto her heart and threatened to swallow her whole. Uselessly, she can only pray for their safety. Their nights spent with her clinging to her twin, with him comforting her tirelessly until they fell asleep.

Blinking herself back to the present, a tall man with sleek, dark hair caught  Quali's  attention. He seemingly glided through the crowd, alerted eyes darting everywhere as if he's trying to run away from a perpetrator.  Quali  held up her hand and signed to  Quanti  at the sight of their new  victi –  Quali  squashed that thought out as she ran, catch is the word, she huffs, victim is too much for her.

Quanti  caught her signal and carefully jumped down, quickly following after the man. He narrows his eyes and deduces that this man is wealthy, plenty so, judging from the amount of jewelry in his body and that conspicuous suitcase he held tightly in his hands.  Quali  followed after her brother, weaving in and out of the corners, keeping herself hidden from sight. Squaring his shoulders,  Quanti  rams himself onto the man’s back and pries the suitcase from his hand and makes a run for it, not caring if he bumped into people along the way. Behind him, he hears a cry and a loud thudding of footsteps behind him. Dread fills at the bottom of his stomach and the hair at the back of his neck stands, signaling  Quanti  of danger and he grabs onto a nearby pipe to launch himself away from the man’s swipe, a sharp sting on his side makes him falter, his eyes catching the glint of light from the dagger clutched onto the man’s hand. For a while they both stood on a standstill, the man opened his mouth to speak but was cut off when another man’s yelling caught their attention– the police!  Quanti  growls and chucks a crate to the man’s face and sprints off, ignoring the cries of the policeman behind them.

Quali , out of breath and bordering on having a panic attack at the chaos around her, had earlier lost sight of her brother and is now running around looking for him when she notices a familiar back entering a dark alleyway. Her shoulders relaxed, and without a second thought, she went through the alleyway. Quickly feeling like her breath was punched out of her lungs when she finds her twin sitting on the floor, back on the wall, grasping his side. Her breath hitches at the sight of blood coating his fingers, and she drops to her knees in front of him, biting her tongue to keep herself from sobbing out loud.  Quanti  turns his head and locks eyes with her, looking pale and triumphant, he smiles weakly at her and hands her the suitcase. He lets out a puff of air from his nose when she ignores it, and looks away when she tears at her shirt to apply pressure to his wound. The graze wasn’t deep but the bleeding wasn't stopping, soaking  Quanti’s  shirt just below the ribs, he focused on his breathing and bit down the inside of his cheek to silence himself from crying out when  Quali  carried him in her arms, she’s always been stronger than him, he muses, distracting himself from the pain by thinking about the stars above and focuses on the warmth emanating from  Quali . They were about to leave when they heard a deep baritone voice announcing that a child thief is on the loose and entrance and exits are also blocked. Luckily, both siblings were prepared for this kind of incident to happen–  Quanti  thought of every possible outcome to their plans and drilled  Quali  on all of them. They had stashed old sacks in unattended alleyways containing sets of clothes and candy.  Quali  carefully adjusted  Quanti  on her arms and set him down in a more secluded part of the alley, she then stood up and quietly went to a nearby well, coming back holding two sacks and setting it down to cover brother, before laying curled down next to him, both siblings keeping close to each other.

Hours later,  Quanti’s  eyes flutter open, the stinging from his wound has now turned into a dull ache. He turns to  Quali’s  sleeping form and gently nudges her awake. The blue sky had turned into the dark of midnight and  Quali  observes the police milling about and notes that they have decreased in number making this the perfect time to escape. They used their height and small physique to their advantage: hiding on bushes, carefully jumping on roofs, and dashing away from the place, the suitcase secured in  Quali’s  hand as the other held  Quanti’s .

The sight of their home had filled  Quali  with relief, dingy as it was, it had been their home for a long time now. She led them both towards their creaky bed, helping  Quanti  lay on it and setting the suitcase beside him. Like clockwork,  Quali  turned to their bedside table and lit their candle,  Quanti  can tell she’s holding back her tears as she ran around looking for bandages and something to properly clean his wound up. They were both quiet, both catching their breaths for different reasons,  Quanti  from his escapade and  Quanti  from the scare of seeing her brother in red. The air had grown when she finished.  Quanti  would have fallen asleep if it weren’t for the gentle grip rousing him, and he looks into  Quali’s  glassy eyes, the light of the fire illuminating her unshed tears, amplifying her shaken expression, and he feels his chest constrict. Knowing it was he who caused her to look like this.

She calls out to him, voice wavering, but  Quanti  can recognize her attempt to be strong and he nods at her, afraid he already knows what she’ll say– and his suspicions were correct, when  Quali  took a shaky breath, steeling herself, and she tells him that this will be the last time they’ll steal– the last damn time they’ll risk themselves like this, I can’t watch you get even more hurt, brother, please. Her grip on his hand tightens, and  Quanti  grimaces, not from her hand, but from the tears now falling freely down her cheeks. He balls his free hand into a tight fist, trying to remedy his shaking, but he can’t deny her anymore. Today had been extreme for both of them, it wasn’t the first time they got into a scuffle during their runs but it was the first time  Quanti  got wounded like this, and what with the police patrolling the area and his existence announced to the town, his brows knit in frustration, he had been careless. If they chose to continue stealing, they could be caught and put behind bars, separately adopted, or killed.  Quanti  sighs in resignation, his hand raising to wipe at  Quali’s  tears, who lays her head on his shoulder. For a while, they stayed that way, like every night, he caressed his sisters hair as she cried her heart out. When his eyes rest on the suitcase, he glares at it in disdain, but still reaches out to put on his lap.  Quali  sniffs and wipes her tears away, curious at what the contents of the suitcase is. They have stolen suitcases before, but it mostly contained clothes and food. This one, though, greeted them with documents. Because of their predicament, both siblings had no education and no parents to guide them, so it’s no surprise that they can’t comprehend the writings on the paper.  Quanti  took the documents and set them aside. His breath gets caught in his throat at what he sees next, his ears catching on to  Quali’s  sharp gasp. They look at each other in disbelief. This can’t be. Inside the silver suitcase, underneath the paperwork, were bulks of orange cash neatly stashed before them.  Quali  tries to steady her breathing, pinching herself, looking at  Quanti , she jumps when she sees his eyes turn glassy, tears slowly falling down his face. When she asks him if he’s alright– if his wound is hurting– he just laughs at her and wipes at his eyes. Can you believe our luck,  Quali ?

They marvel at the wads of cash more, and  Quanti  finally agrees. Let’s start anew, he chokes out as he cries more.  Quali  cries with him, and they hold each other, eager to start again, eager to finally start living their lives.  That  cut had been worth it.

Both siblings exchanged letters and postcards,  Quali  would receive gifts from  Quanti , while he received cute little paintings of her adventures. Silent I miss  you’s  sent back and forth, each carrying a weight of their unconditional love for each other.

The event was called La  Peinture  Competition 2022. She waited for days, agitated, until the announcers finally concluded the winner.  Quali's  painting won the grand champion award and she's called by the management to describe her work to the public. Ecstatic,  Quali  proudly told the audience that her painting was the very best painting she has ever made– her magnum opus! After receiving the award, she took a flight to return to their hometown. Eager to see her brother again and tell him about her  win.

As clear blue bled into golden red, and as golden red faded into a blanket of dark indigo.  Quali  lets out a shaky breath. There he was. She approaches him and kneels down, the grass had grown since the last time she visited, briefly, she thought about trimming them. He’d like that.  Feeling  her eyes well up in tears,  Quali  breathes in to steady herself. She came here bearing great news! She wets her lips and smiles, “It’s been a while, hasn’t it, brother?” Her voice comes out strained but she steels herself and continues, "Can you believe it brother, I've won my first ever competition in painting and it's all thanks to you. Thank you for supporting me since childhood and keeping on motivating me that I will become a great painter in the future. I'm sorry that I just visited you this year, postponed flights and various projects withheld me."

Quali  lit up a candle in the shape of the sun and swallowed the lump on her throat. "It's already been 10 years brother since I saw you". She then looked at  Quanti's  tombstone. At least it was kept clean. She brushed a few fallen leaves off of it.

Breathe in, breathe out, just like how he taught her.  Quali  shifts and sits beside the tombstone, she wraps her arms around her legs, resting her chin on her knees as she begins to tell him all that happened in her life. The sounds from nature washing over her like a protective blanket.

"I wish we had a picture together before you died. But I know you didn’t like taking pictures, that's why this is my gift for you,” She turns briefly to rummage around her canvas bag, pulling out her masterpiece, she presents it to the stone with a smile, “This is the painting that I've won in the competition! Did you know that my inspiration for this painting is you?" She placed the painting upright beside the tombstone. Feeling her breath leave her, her chest tightening at the sight of what should have been him, what should have been his arms wrapping around her in a proud embrace, what should have been his warmth letting her know that she’s home.

Instead, she is only comforted by the light breeze of the cold autumn night. Her heart feels like it’s splitting open and getting crushed. She misses him, misses his words of encouragement, misses the nights where only they existed in their shared haven. Where the cruelty of the world couldn’t reach them. Where the vengeance of one man couldn’t take what once belonged to her.  But  tonight, only the memory of her brother was left to her, and only the chill of the night can hold her as she, once again, cried her heart out in front of him.

When it was time to go,  Quali  gave one last smile to her brother’s image, patting the stone that represents his resting place, and leaves with a heavy heart. Left behind was a bottle of his favorite strawberry milk drink, and her masterpiece. A painting with  Quanti  amongst the stars as its prince, ruling over the galaxies with a gentle smile on his face. Beneath the painting is a text that says: “The First and Last Place That I Wish To Be With You Forever, Where You Shine The Brightest.”  Quali  named her painting " Risachi ". The name comes from the brand of the art materials  Quanti  first bought for his sister with the money he (honestly) gained, stating that their style reminded him of her, and his first signal to let her achieve her dreams as an artist.  Quali   only bought from them after that.
