[Audio] A Cow is just a Cow…. Right? A Cow is just a Cow…. Right? Seth Godin and his family were taking a road trip through France. While driving through the countryside they were delighted to see fields full of cows. They hadn’t seen many cows before, so seeing entire an entire field full of Black & Brown cows was exciting… When they passed the second Farm there were still cheers and excitement you know, LOOK AT THE COWS! But after about the 5th or 6th farm the excitement had worn off. It was just kind of dul yeah already seen plenty of cows, and a cows a cow, right? That’s when Seth had the idea pop into his head… His kids were right, they had at this point seen plenty of field full of black & brown cows and a cow IS just a cow afterall… BUT what if out in that field of cows these kids saw a bright shiny PURPLE cow in the middle of those black and brown cows. Now that would be remarkable, that would probably be a moment that stands out and sticks with those kids for years, if not forever..

One of the reasons the book became a best seller is that it was itself marketed through some of the techniques that he describes in his book. He published an article introducing his new book in the Feburuary 2003 issue of the monthly American Business magazine Fast Company. At the end of the Article, it said something like: “if you want a copy of the book for free, send $5 to cover shipping and handling and if there’s any left, he’ll send you one” This edition was packaged in a milk carton. The cover was Purple and White, and the words were printed sideways. In the book’s first two years of release, it sold more than 150,000 copies. The Book is literally a real life example of a “Purple Cow” - The essence of the Purple Cow is that it would be remarkable. “Something Remarkable is worth paying attention to.”.
