Learning Points. Describe something which can be negatively affected by impurities..

Purity. A pure substance consists of only one type of element or only one type of compound..

Impurity. An impurity is a substance, usually unwanted, which is present in another substance e.g. the blue element on this slide..

Medicines. Medicines usually need to be pure substances and if an impurity is present, it could make it unsafe for the patient..

Mixtures. A mixture is two or more substances that are not chemically bonded together. These substances can be elements, compounds, or both..

Melting Point. Pure substances have sharp melting points (e.g. 87 degrees C) whilst mixtures melt over a wider temperature range (e.g. 86-89 degrees C)..

Review Questions. Explain what an impurity is, in relation to a pure substance..
