PROJECT DESCRIPTION. More people have been killed and displaced by Tropical Storms in Malawi. The flooding comes as Malawi starts to recover from the effects of tropical storm Ana, which hit the country earlier, affecting more than 900,000 people in 17 of the country’s 28 districts . Rains has been highly linked to Cholera in Malawi every year. The situation has become worse this year due to the cyclones. According to UNICEF report on Malawi cyclones (2022) “On 2 March 2022, Malawi confirmed first case of cholera at Machinga District Hospital(p.g, 2). Chiradzulu district has been experiencing water problems due low water table. This makes the initiative of accessing water more expensive in which most communites do not afford. Our initiative is based on providing safe water through the installation of new improved, affordable and durable boreholes to prevent Cholera in 3 selected vulnerable communities in Chiradzulu district in the southern part of Malawi..

The skills gained by the community borehole committees will continue in managing, maintaining and repairing of the boreholes in the future. The money contributed every month will also be responsible for continuity purchase of spare parts of the boreholes or hiring of experts if any technical problem beyond their capacity arises. As more funds are raised, they may use extra in the purchasing and installation of another borehole in order to reduce the pressure of all the community drinking from one borehole which may lead to its sustainability..

PROJECT IMPACT. This project has brought a number of positive results to the communities. In the communities we reached out and implemented this project: Over 60% of the community residents have access to safe water all the time. This translate to over 30,000 individuals having access to safe water all year. The project has brought that sense of community social responsibility in solving their own family, community and country problems. This have mainly achieved through their active participation through in the project circle. Communities are now able to solve community problems cohesively after our project. For instance in one of our implementation community called Chimwadza village, after we mobilized the community members for this project, the community authorities also used the same gatherings in persuading them to repair a bridge that was damaged due to the cyclones. The bridge connects Chimwadza village to another village. The bridge was repaired within 8hrs as the whole community participated. The project has also managed to build the capacity of the communities in borehole repair and management, cholera prevention and treatment and community disaster management. This has been achieved through our community sensitization campaigns and capacity building workshops..
