[Audio] Illegal use of opioids is when they are made, sold and used without a prescription from a doctor. An example of this is making a chemist lab at home and making your own opioids then selling or obtaining them through this illegal way. However, obtaining a legal prescription and selling that prescription to someone else is also illegal. Drugs are only legal when the are prescribed by a licenses physician and taken as proscribed by the person they were proscribed to..
[Audio] Covid 19 pandemic, access to substance abuse treatment became limited because resources were pulled to manage the pandemic making less resources available for those suffering from addiction..The government enforced several restrictions that "included stay-at-home requirements, requirements serving to limit interstate travel, limits on the size of public gatherings, and recommendations about the closing of schools and workplaces" (Dore, T., & Mach, T.,2022). 400 roads to be closed, blocking access to the major regional health care hub of Asheville, as well as many smaller communities. Residents needing urgent access to treatments such as dialysis or daily medications for substance use disorders may have been cut off. Health care workers may have been unable to access their clinics as well" (Rafferty, J. P.2025).
[Audio] In response to the overwhelming deaths and overdoses related to the Opioid Epidemic, these programs were developed to further the understanding and prevention of the Opioid crisis. The Heal Initiative program was launched in April 2018 by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Its objective was to boost research aimed at improving treatments for opioid misuse and addiction and enhancing pain management including research to integrate behavioral interventions with medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and implementation science to develop and test treatment models. D.A.R.E educated children on the dangers of using illegal drugs. Recently schools have begun to incorporate opioid education in the classroom. Some states have established standards for integrating safe medication practices and opioid misuse prevention into K-12. Examples of new prevention implemented in school's systems Ohio's Health and Opioid-abuse Prevention Education (HOPE) Curriculum, and Maryland's heroin and opioid toolkit" (Weis, M., Markiewicz, J. M., & Swanberg, K. S). In research Demographics that are often underserved are Age extremes "(e.g. under 18 and over 75), Women, Different ethnic minority groups, Male/female sex (depending on trial context), LGBTQ+/ sexual orientation, educational disadvantage. A few Reasons why these groups are underserved in research is specific cultural barriers, Lack of trust in trials and Negative financial impact" (NIHR 2020). Historically Demographics that are underserved in education are people with lower income, racial and ethnic background. These groups are often underserved because they lack finances and resources to sustain or further their education leading to education inequalities. These inequalities further contribute to the issues of addiction as lack of education and financial disparities are a cause of addiction issues. Socioeconomic status significantly impacts substance use addiction. "Factors such as low income, unemployment, and lack of social support increases the vulnerability to substance abuse" (LMSW, W. B. G. P., & Posts Gigi Price LMSW. 2024). D A R E was the only program to mention war on drugs and this was a one-time experience in the 5th grade. Still the program for me influenced the stigma that drug users were bad people. There was not enough information or educational resources to fully grasp what the war on drugs was. More resent advances of education and awareness focus on deterring these stigmas in hopes that those affected will reach out for help..
[Audio] Someone who experiences substance abuse deals with strong stigmas that can deter them from getting help for their addiction problem. The humanistic view has helped changed society through awareness and education that focus on its values like openness and honesty. These values form a community understanding and help addicts feel secure to seek support (East coast recovery, 2024)..
