Single-use plastics, or disposable plastics, are used only once before they are thrown away or recycled. The impacts of this plastic waste on the environment and our health are global and can be drastic. Single-use plastic products are more likely to end up in our seas than reusable options.

Scene 3

These comprise polythene bags, plastic drinking bottles, plastic bottle caps, food wrappers, plastic sachets, plastic wrappers, straws, stirrers and Styrofoam cups or plates.   There are many uses for plastic that are not only reasonable but important, such as surgical gloves, or straws for people with disabilities. But these cases make up a small fraction of single-use plastic.

Examples of single-use plastic include: plastic forks and knives plastic shopping bags plastic coffee cup lids plastic water bottles Styrofoam and plastic take out containers and, of course, plastic straws

According to the U.N. Environment, the most common single-use plastics found in the environment (in order of magnitude) are: cigarette butts plastic lids straws and stirrers other types of plastic bags foam take-away containers

Single-use plastics are a glaring example of the problems with throwaway culture. Instead of investing in quality goods that will last, we often prioritize convenience over durability and consideration of long-term impacts. Our reliance on these plastics means we are accumulating waste at a staggering rate. We produce 300 million tons of plastic each year worldwide, half of which is for single-use items. That’s nearly equivalent to the weight of the entire human population.  Research shows the effects plastic has on the Earth as well as on humans. It can take up to thousands of years for plastic bags and Styrofoam containers to decompose. In the meantime, it contaminates our soil and water. The toxic chemicals used to manufacture plastic gets transferred to animal tissue, eventually entering the human food chain. Styrofoam products are toxic if ingested and can damage nervous systems, lungs and reproductive organs.

Plastic never goes away:  Plastic is a material made to last forever, yet 33 percent of all plastic - water bottles, bags and straws - are used just once and thrown away. Plastic cannot biodegrade; it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces. Plastic affects human health: Toxic chemicals leach out of plastic and are found in the blood and tissue of nearly all of us. Exposure to them is linked to cancers, birth defects, impaired immunity, endocrine disruption and other ailments.

Plastic attracts other pollutants : Chemicals in plastic which give them their rigidity or flexibility (flame retardants, bisphenols, phthalates and other harmful chemicals) are oily poisons that repel water and stick to petroleum-based objects like plastic debris.  So, the toxic chemicals that leach out of plastics can accumulate on other plastics.  This is a serious concern with increasing amounts of plastic debris accumulating in the world's oceans.

Plastic spoils our groundwater: There are thousands of landfills in the United States. Buried beneath each one of them, toxic chemicals from plastics drain out and seep into groundwater, flowing downstream into lakes and rivers.

Plastic threatens wildlife. Wildlife become entangled in plastic, they eat it or mistake it for food and feed it to their young, and it is found littered in even extremely remote areas of the Earth.  In our oceans alone, plastic debris outweighs zooplankton by a ratio of 36-to-1 Plastic piles up in the environment. Americans discard more than 30 million tons of plastic a year. Only 8 percent gets recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, is burned or becomes litter.

Plastic poisons our food chain. Even plankton, the tiniest creatures in our oceans, are eating microplastics and absorbing their hazardous chemicals.  The tiny, broken down pieces of plastic are displacing the algae needed to sustain larger sea life who feed on them. Plastic costs billions to abate. Everything suffers: tourism, recreation, business, the health of humans, animals, fish and birds—because of plastic pollution. The financial damage continuously being inflicted is inestimable.

It has a big impact on wildlife too: Birds usually confuse shreds of plastic bags for food and end up eating the toxic debris. Fish consume thousands of tons of plastic in a year, ultimately transferring it up the food chain to marine mammals.

For many animal species, plastic waste is simply a nightmare.  The  v ideo  of a sea turtle with a plastic straw stuck in its nostril went viral globally; it may have even led to the plastic straw bans. Plastic items like bags and straws choke wildlife and block animals’ stomachs. Turtles and dolphins, for example, often mistake plastic bags for food. According to Global Citizen, plastic production has more than tripled since the ’90s. It also shows half the world’s plastic was made after 2003. About 150 million tons of plastic—many of it non-degradable—is floating in our oceans, reports the  World Economic Forum . You may be aware of the gigantic garbage patch floating between California and Hawaii. It contains an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of plastics, says  Global Citizen.

India consumes an estimated 16.5 million  tonnes , about 1.6 million truck full of plastic annually, of which 25-30% percent remains uncollected as per this June 2018  report . The plastic processing industry is estimated to grow to 22 million  tonnes  per year by 2020, as per another study. The sad part is that the current situation of disposing plastic is not easy to explain. One cannot dispose of plastic like other forms of garbage. Plastic is strong, flexible and durable, making it extremely useful and hard-to-break. As useful as it might be, it does create harm to the environment by entering the oceans every day and staying there forever, becoming toxic 'food' for marine life.

The problem is irresponsible human behavior in disposing of plastic. If recycled, plastic can be made to form recycled polyester which in turn is made to produce a number of things like shoes, T-shirts, bags, etc. thereby causing less strain on natural resources, then plastic has value. Every individual can contribute by making small changes in their consumption and dumping patterns. To begin with, let’s follow these simple, basic rules: After using any plastic product, wash it with clear water Crush the bottle or container Store them separately from the wet waste Handover plastic waste to the plastic agents ( Kabadiwalas )

Scene 16

For effective waste disposal, segregation is the key. Dividing waste into different elements can help keep the environment clean. Plastic is to be kept separately from the wet/liquid and organic waste so that it is easy to hand it over for recycling. The clean segregated plastic should be sent for recycling through ragpickers/ recycling agencies.

Bottles For Change- Keeping The Environment Clean

We all know how we have polluted our surroundings by neglecting the way we use and dispose of plastic. To improve the quality of living, we will have to go back to the basics we had all learned in school: Reduce Reuse Recycle Educate To educate and create awareness about the use and proper disposal of plastic,  Bisleri  International Pvt. Ltd. initiated a program called Bottles For Change.

The world’s global plastic disaster sounds downright scary, but we can still change our fate. Here are some ideas: Use cloth or reusable shopping bags instead of plastic bags Bring your own coffee mugs, and avoid establishments that don’t offer non-plastic options. Or opt for “for here” options or regular mugs, dishes and cutlery Avoid non-recycled plastic bottles and plastic straws .

Support efforts to reduce our dependence on single-use plastics. Examples are plastic bans and levies on shopping bags Recycle As Much As Possible —and support establishments that do the same Buy items in bulk to reduce plastic packaging Bring your own take-out containers, or support establishments that use recyclable takeout options Be informed—get to know what is and isn’t recyclable in your town/city/area .

We can all do our part to prevent further damage to our environment and our waterways from plastics!  ‘Zero waste’  or ‘zero plastic waste’ movements are springing up around the world to tackle this issue. If we each do our part now, we can help stop the world’s preventable plastic problem from getting worse.
