History of Maharashtra : The name Maharashtra was given by Huan Tsang, a Chinese Traveller. The name is derived as :Maha = great and Rakshtrika =Ratta, the tribe/dynasty of pretty cheifs. It was Formed on 1 st May 1960 by splitting the Bombay state. Maharashtra was ruled by the maurya Empire in the fourth and third centuries BCE. Around 230 BCE Maharashtra came under the Satavahana Dynasty for 400 years. Then the Chalukya dynasty from sixth to the eighth century CE and many more dynasty revolved in Maharashtra..
