Dredging. Maintaining existing waterways: Dredging is an important step in waterway maintenance. By removing the accumulated debris, dredging can restore the waterway to its original depth and condition. Dredging also removes dead vegetation, pollutants and trash that have gathered in these areas. Creating new waterways: Many ports are building new waterways with dredging to reach new trade centers and improve the efficiency of transporting goods. Dredging ensures cargo vessels of all sizes can dock and do not run aground. Increasing waterway depth: As sediment builds up on the bottom of the waterway, it reduces the depth of the water. Dredging strips away the accumulated debris, which can restore the water body to its original depth and reduce the risk of flooding. Cleaning ponds and lagoons: Ponds and lagoons contain stagnant water, often can become mucky and have a foul odor. By using dredging, one can remove the accumulated sediment that has caused this making for a healthier body of water..

Aids to navigation. The term "aids to navigation" includes buoys, day beacons, lights, lightships, radio beacons, fog signals, marks and other devices used to provide "street" signs on the water. Aids To Navigation include all the visible, audible and electronic symbols that are established by government and private authorities for piloting purposes. Day channel marking is being provided across entire stretch from Haldia to Allahabad to facilitate round the year navigation. Night navigation aids between Haldia – Ballia (1140 km) stretch have also been provided through a system comprising of light - fitted country boats / bamboo structures, MS poles and Trestle beacon towers to facilitate round the clock navigation..

CARGO MOVEMENTS. The transportation of Coal for NTPC Power Plant is being undertaken since November 2013 from sand heads (Bay of Bengal) to Farakka through National Waterway–1. During FY 2017-18 about 1.60 lakh tons of imported Coal (upto July, 2017) has been transported successfully by M/s Jindal ITF Ltd. using the barges of 1500 – 2000 tons capacity. Moreover, about 30 lakh tons cargo comprising of fly ash, food grains & general cargo moved between India and Bangladesh through National Waterway - 1 and Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route under Inland Water Transit & Trade. In addition, the trial movement of 240 tons of bagged cement from Kolaghat located on river Rupnarayan (NW-87) to Bhagalpur on river Ganga (NW-1) and 300 tons of bagged fly ash from Kahalgaon (NW-1) to Kolaghat of M/s Dalmia Bharat Cements has been done by IWAI’s shallow draft cargo vessel MV VV Giri under consultancy services for plan and implementation support for commercialization of NW-1..
