ROHINGYA CRISIS

Rohingyas as a minority who experience cruel oppression in Myanmar The cleaning or destruction of Rohingya settlements by the Myanmar government From the Rohingya crisis, it can be seen that the implementation of human rights is still very minimal, especially in Myanmar, which is included in the ASEAN region.

ASEAN’S RESPONSE

ASEAN leaders expressed common concern and urged the Myanmar government to work together in dealing with the Rohingya crisis at the 2009 ASEAN Summit On August 17th 2012, ASEAN and the Foreign Ministers of ASEAN countries made a statement for Myanmar. Establishing a Refugee Handling Task Force in the ASEAN Region to deal with Rohingya refugees. Cooperating with UNHCR to handle Rohingya refugees and other refugees in the ASEAN region Myanmar held a special informal meeting with ASEAN foreign ministers in Yangon in December 2016 to discuss the Rohingya crisis

ASEAN MEMBER COUNTRIES RESPONSES

Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, and Philippines Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia

With the ASEAN Way principle which emphasizes the non-intervention attitude of member countries towards other countries, member countries can only provide assistance and solutions in resolving this crisis.

Indonesia, especially President Joko Widodo, urged Aung San Suu Kyi to immediately stop the military's suppression of the Rohingya ethnic group and take precautions so that violence does not recur. Indonesia also urges the Myanmar government to immediately restore the situation in Rakhine. Conducting Search and Rescue (SAR) operations for refugees who are still adrift in the ocean Carry out coordinated sea patrols and facilitate evacuation at sea when vessels containing such migrants are found; Provide humanitarian assistance, including shelter, food, medicine, and other necessities for migrants stranded in the territory of the three countries; Improve cooperation and coordination with UNHCR and IOM in identifying and verifying immigrants, including finding countries for resettlement; Activate the resources of the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Center) to resolve this crisis
