[Audio] Let's begin. So, in July 1964, There were about 20,000 Malay celebrants at the Padang to celebrate prophet Muhammad's birthday..
[Audio] At 4 pm, the procession moved off. Everyone walked through the city towards Geylang. To get there, they had to pass by Lavender street, which was called Kampong Soo Poo Road at that time..
[Audio] That is where the attack started. Even today, it is unclear who started the first attack. But it is certain that angry exchanges between Chinese bystanders and Malay Marchers led to the outbreak of fighting..
[Audio] By then, news of the violence was spreading. The riots broke the entire police force into action..
[Audio] An island wide curfew was also imposed to stop people from rioting at the streets.
[Audio] There was a positive consequence. The racial riots played a important role in the separation of Singapore from Malaysia, leading to Singapore's declaration of independence on 9 August 1965..
[Audio] The riots had many negative consequences too, such as the death and injuries of many people, trust issues and tensions between the Malay and Chinese..
[Audio] Some values we learnt from this is, Trust: it lets us trust each other that our friends will not betray us..
[Audio] We can also learn about, Understanding from this: so, we can understand each other better to avoid misunderstandings..
[Audio] The importance of harmony is: Singapore is a multi-racial and multi-religious society. Therefore, racial and religious harmony is vital for Singapore's social cohesion..
[Audio] I have a question for you. Why do you think racial harmony is important in Singapore..
