 When was it introduced? Announced at Oracle Cloud World in October 2022 and became generally available on February 15, 2023. Cloud or On-Premises? Cloud Only (OCI) – Not available for traditional on-premises deployments. Supported Database Types - Autonomous Database (Shared & Dedicated)

The process begins with the most recent full backup (Level 0).
Apply Subsequent Incremental Backups
ARS then applies all incremental backups (Level 1) taken after the full backup.
These backups include all changed data blocks since the previous backup.
Apply Continuously Streamed Redo Logs
To bring the database to the exact recovery point in time, ARS replays the real-time redo logs that were streamed to the internal ZDLRA.
This includes committed transactions right up to the failure point or user-defined time.
Finalize and Mount the Restored Database
The recovered state is validated and then the database is reopened for use.
This is all handled automatically without DBA intervention. All done securely over the private endpoint..

There are two types of recovery services: Autonomous Recovery Service (RCV) and Zero Data Loss Autonomous Recovery Service (ZRCV). The difference between these two types is whether or not the REDO transport option is included. RCV is a type without the REDO transport option, and ZRCV is a type with the REDO transport option. When the REDO transport option is enabled, real-time REDO transport is performed, providing a recovery point objective (RPO) close to zero even in the event of a failure that causes the loss of the REDO log on the DB storage.

Real-time data protection in ZRCV (Zero Data Loss Autonomous Recovery Service) ensures zero or near-zero data loss by continuously capturing database changes as they happen. Here's how it works:

Real-Time Redo Transport

1.As soon as a transaction occurs in the Oracle Database, the redo log data (which records every change) is immediately transmitted to ZRCV over the network.
 2. ZRCV receives and persists the redo stream in real time—before the database        writes it to local storage.
 3. This off-host persistence means data is protected even if:       The database crashes       The host system fails       The storage subsystem is corrupted
 4. In parallel, full backups and incremental backups are sent to ZRCV. ZRCV continuously validates the integrity of both redo and backup streams.
 5. In case of recovery, ZRCV can replay the exact sequence of changes from redo to         bring the database to its last known consistent state. This enables point-in-time recovery (PITR) down to the last committed transaction, achieving RPO ≈ 0.

Below sequence outlines the technical workflow to configure automatic backups using Oracle Autonomous Recovery Service (ARS) or Zero Data Loss Autonomous Recovery Service(ZRCV) for OCI-hosted databases.
 1. Ensure Database Version is ≥ 19.16 / 21.7 / 23.4 and COMPATIBLE ≥ 19.0.0.
 2. Create IAM Policies in root compartment for database, rcs, and admin groups to manage recovery-service-family.
 3. Create IPv4 Private Subnet (min /24) in DB VCN for Recovery Service (e.g., BACKUP_SN).
 4. Set Ingress Security Rules to allow TCP ports 8005 and 2484 from DB to Recovery Service.
 5. Register Recovery Service Subnet via OCI > Database > Backups > Recovery Service Subnets.
 6. (Optional) Create custom protection policy (e.g., BR50 with 50-day retention).
 7. Enable Automatic Backups on the DB > select Autonomous Recovery Service and a protection policy.
 8. (Optional) Enable Real-Time Protection (requires DB ≥ 19.18 / 21.8).
 9. Monitor Backups under Database Backups > Autonomous Recovery Service in OCI console.
