The Olympics are a big sports event. Every 4 years, athletes from many countries come to compete. Athletes can run, swim, ski, and do gymnastics.  The Olympics show hard work and big dreams. Lesson Objectives: Today I can…tell what the Olympics are name one Olympic symbol  explain gymnastics in simple words.

Starter Activity:  Oldest Games: started over 2,700 years ago in Ancient Greece. Two Seasons:  Summer Games and Winter  Games Mascot:  Each Olympics has a special character  Symbols: Rings: show the world joined in friendship Torch:  flame-lit in Greece and carried to the host city Motto: “Faster, Higher, Stronger—Together

1. The Rings represent the 5 continents. Colors represent all nations. Interlaced to represent the meeting of world athletes. Designed in 1913 by Pierre de Coubertin (Father of modern games)

2. The Motto – CITIUS-ALTIUS-FORTIUS Latin for “Faster, Higher, Stronger” Became the motto in 1894, the same year as the IOC’s creation Coubertin borrowed the  mott from, Henri Didon, a Dominican priest

3. The Flame First Torch relay took place in 1936 in for Berlin Games New torch design for each Games Torch is lit by Sun’s rays in Olympia, Greece and taken to Games Carried by leaders, celebrities, and common people. The Sochi Torch was carried into Space and to the North Pole

What Is Gymnastics?  Gymnastics is a sport with safe body moves. Gymnasts show strength, balance, and flexibility. Gymnastics helps with body control.  Where they come from, Gymnastics began over 2,500 years ago in Ancient Greece. They believed that strong bodies and smart minds both matter Equipment: balance beam, uneven bars, vault, floor
