The development trials demonstrated the weapon system's reliable hit-to-kill capability across various target engagement scenarios, including approaching, receding, and crossing modes. This marks a significant milestone in India's efforts to enhance its naval capabilities and maintain strategic stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The launch of S4* follows the commissioning of Indian Naval Ship (INS) Arighaat (2nd SSBN) by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on 29th August, 2024, while INS Aridhaman(3rd SSBN) is expected to be commissioned in 2025. This is the first artillery firing range in a high-altitude area. This range will allows the IA to practice firing howitzers and other weapon systems. The IA has identified 2 firing ranges in AR – one in Tawang (operationalised) and the other is in the process of getting notified. Two more ranges have been identified in the north and the work was ongoing in consonance with respective state governments. 2 Women Navy Officers are Set To Sail Around The World For 8 Months Lieutenant Commander (Lt. Cdr) Dilna K. and Lt. Cdr Roopa A., the two women officers of the Indian Navy (IN) have embarked on a voyage to circumnavigate the globe in a sailboat, named 'Navika Sagar Parikrama' on the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini. The 2nd edition of Navika Sagar Parikrama expedition was flagged off at the Ocean Sailing Node, INS Mandovi near Panaji, Goa by Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi on 2nd October 2024. i.Navika Sagar Parikrama is a maritime expedition by the Indian Navy(IN) that involves circumnavigating the globe in a sailboat crewed by women officers. ii.The voyage covering around 23,000 nautical miles will take around 240 days, across 4 continents through 3 oceans and 3 challenging Capes. iii.The first edition of the expedition was conducted in 2017. GRSE Delivered INS Nirdeshak, Second of Four Survey Vessels to the Indian Navy On 8th October 2024, Kolkata (West Bengal, WB)-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Limited delivered Indian Naval Ship (INS) Nirdeshak (Yard 3026), the second of four Survey Vessel Large (SVL) ships, to the Indian Navy (IN). It is steered by Warship Design Bureau of IN and being constructed at GRSE headquarters in Kolkata, WB. The SVL ships are designed and built according to the classification rules of Indian Register of Shipping by M/s GRSE, Kolkata. Note: In December 2023, GRSE Limited had delivered (INS) Sandhayak (Yard 3025), the 1st of four SVL ships, to the IN. Key Features: i.It has an overall length of 110 meters (m), with displacement of about 3400 tons. It has an indigenous content of over 80% by cost. It was built using "Integrated Construction" technology. ii.It is equipped with state-of-the-art hydrographic equipment such as data acquisition and processing system, autonomous underwater vehicle, remotely operated vehicle, DGPS long range positioning systems, digital side sonar, among others. iii.The ship is powered two marine diesel engines and can achieve speeds in excess of 18 knots. The torpedoes are intended for use with India's MH-60R Seahawk helicopters to enhance naval capabilities. About MK 54: The MK 54 torpedo is an advanced lightweight weapon developed by Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems in collaboration with the US Navy. It can be launched from various platforms, including surface ships, fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopters. It has replacing the older Mark 46 torpedo. Its capability to operate effectively in both littoral and deep-water environments allows it for various missions/targets, regardless of water depth. This capability allows it to assist in maneuvering disabled ships back to safety or to support naval exercises. iii.It can launch and recover training targets, which are crucial for conducting drills and exercises to improve the skills of naval personnel. Launching training targets allows naval personnel to practice in conditions that closely mimic real-world situations. These targets can represent enemy vessels or specific threats, helping crews prepare for various combat scenarios. iv.It is designed to use uncrewed autonomous vehicles (UAVs), which help with surveillance and gathering information. These UAVs can do their job without putting anyone at risk. Using UAVs allows the Navy to cover more area, helping them keep a closer watch on activities at sea and stay alert in important locations. v.Another vital role of the MPV is to serve as trial platform for testing indigenous weapons and sensors currently under development. Indian Army Launches Multi-Target Detonation Device "Agniastra" in Gangtok On 11th October 2024, Indian Army (IA)'s Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Upendra Dwivedi launched the "Agniastra," a multi-target portable detonation device (WEDC), during the Army Commanders Conference (ACC) held in Gangtok, Sikkim. It was developed by Major Rajprasad RS from the Indian Army's Corps of Engineers. About Agniastra (WEDC): i.Agniastra was developed to address the critical operational needs in military engagement. ii.The device was patented on 19th March 2024, reflecting its innovative design and technology. Key Features: i.WEDC was created to improve the safety and reliability of executing multiple-target detonations, addressing shortcomings of older systems like the Exploder Dynamo Capacitor. ii.The device significantly increases the operational range to 2.5 kilometers, compared to the limited 400meter range of its predecessor. This allows for greater tactical flexibility. iii.The system is equipped with microprocessor-based electronic controls, which enhance its precision and operational capabilities. iv.WEDC can operate in both wired and wireless modes. v.WEDC is specifically designed to assist in counter-terrorism operations, especially in neutralizing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and facilitating safer demolitions from a distance. Applications: i.The Agniastra device is poised to enhance military operations in several critical areas. ii.It has advanced capabilities to infiltrate rooms, destroy bunkers or remote hideouts, and demolish caches. 2024 Army Commanders Conference (ACC): i.2024 Army Commanders Conference (ACC) is the first ACC hosted outside of Delhi. This reflects the strategic importance of Sikkim. ii.The 2024 ACC is a two-phase event. The first phase was held from 10th to 11th October 2024, in Gangtok and the 2nd phase is scheduled to be held from 28th to 29th October 2024 in Delhi. iii.Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD) virtually delivered the keynote address at the conference.
