Introduction. Why do we celebrate Black History Month? Black History Month is celebrated to honor the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans who have helped shape the nation. Black History month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs and adversities that are an indelible part of our country’s history. Origins of Black History Month The story of Black History Month began in 1915 , after the 13 th Amendment abolished slavery..

Jacques Battiste was sworn in as the 20th police chief of the Glynn County Police Department on December 17, 2021. The first in it’s 102-year history.

Interesting facts. In 1926, Carter G. Woodson launched a weeklong celebration of black history in the United States. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognizes Black History Month. Black History Month is also celebrated by Canada, Ireland, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom..

In 1975, McNeely became the first black assistant superintendent of Glynn County Schools. And from 1985 to 1991 , he served as the school system's first black associate superintendent..

Kwame Brown was a standout basketball player at Glynn Academy who played 12 seasons in the NBA after becoming the first high-school player ever drafted No. 1 overall . As a senior, Brown averaged just over 20 points, 13 rebounds and almost six blocks as he led the Terrors to the Final Four Kwame Played with the LA Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies, Detroit Pistons, Charlotte Bobcats, Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, and the Philadelphia 76ers ..

She averaged 25.9 points and 14.4 rebounds a game at Delta State, in Cleveland, Miss. and scored the opening points when women’s basketball was first played at the Olympics, in Montreal in 1976 ..

Mayor Cornell L. Harvey is a native of Brunswick and was elected as the first African American Mayor on January 8, 2014. Prior to appointment to the highest office in the City of Brunswick, Mayor Harvey served as a City Commissioner for over a decade..

Elder G. Bobby Hall was born in Willacoochee, Georgia. He grew up a young lad in Christian development. In a family of seven sisters and four brothers, he gave his life to Christ at the age of 13. He started his ministry on August 2, 1957..

At that time was State Evangelist (1958-1961) Presbyterian for The House of God for 4 years Presiding State Elder for 3 years State Assistant Financial chairman and Chairman of Finance Committee for Church of God in Christ- St. Simon District Special Aide to District Superintendent State Sunday School Superintendent of Southeast Georgia for the COGIC Administrative Assistant to Bishop Chandler D. Owens.
