[Audio] In healthcare, it is essential to be aware of and follow the necessary guidelines for infection prevention and control. Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust have expectations regarding dress code and IPC which will be discussed. Additionally, this presentation will cover the eight key elements of standard precautions. These include: hand hygiene; cleaning and decontamination; safe handling and disposal of waste; sharps safety; personal protective equipment (PPE); safe handling of blood and bodily fluid spillages; safe handling of used linen; and respiratory hygiene. This information should be of great value to all..

This presentation has been created to advise what the expectation is within Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust in relations to Dress code and IPC.

Standard precautions consist of eight key elements. Hand hygiene Cleaning & Decontamination Safe handling & disposal of waste Sharps safety Personal protective equipment (PPE) Safe handling of blood and bodily fluid spillages Safe handling of used linen Respiratory Hygiene

This policy applies to  ALL staff working within the trust.

[Audio] Infectious diseases are capable of spreading from person to person, making it important to understand and minimize their risk of transmission. It is estimated that 300000 people in England may experience healthcare-associated infections each year, costing over a billion pounds. To reduce the risk of infection, washing your hands regularly, following guidelines within your facility, and participating in healthcare-specific education are all effective methods. Prevention is key in avoiding the spread of infectious diseases..

Despite all the medical, scientific and technological advances over the past 20 years, Infectious diseases and infection are an important cause of illness and death. Two healthcare associated pathogens (MRSA and Clostridium Difficile) were recorded as the cause of a contributory factor in 9000 deaths in hospitals or primary care in 2007. It is estimated that 300,000 people in England (approximately 1 in 16) will acquire a (HCAI) Healthcare Associated Infection at a cost of over 1 billion pounds, because of care within the NHS.  To reduce the risk of infection occurring , all Staff must have basic knowledge of how germs are spread (Transmitted) and how the risk of spread can be minimized. Service provision of all kinds must be risk assessed to reduce the likelihood of spread as far as is achievable within the constraints of the area where services are being provided. Infectious diseases, unlike other diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, have one unique property. THEY CAN SPREAD, However,  as in the case of all illnesses, PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN THE CURE. Following the guidelines provided in this presentation will not only help you to reduce the spread of avoidable infections to other people, but it will also keep you healthy and help to prevent you from becoming infected. Spread can occur in several directions including from Staff to patients/Patients to Staff/ Staff/Staff. Staff/Relatives at home.      PLEASE Remember to wash your hands regularly….

[Audio] We will be examining the 5 moments of Hand Hygiene. This is a significant component of infection control as it is an effective way of preventing the transmission of germs, bacteria and viruses. Hand hygiene must be performed prior to and following direct contact with a patient, and also before and after clean/aseptic procedures, when administering intravenous medicines, after coming into contact with bodily fluids, and after touching the patient and their environment. We must also consider the correct technique for handwashing. Let us look at the image provided and recognize the correct steps to follow..

Before/After  ANY direct patient contact. Before/After ANY clean/aseptic procedures. Before administering IV Medications. After handling bodily fluids. After touching patient/ Patient surroundings.

Hand Hygiene is audited – please adhere to the Policy and help lower the risks of HCAI’s within our Clinical unit.

[Audio] Hand hygiene is an essential part of infection prevention and control. Healthcare professionals must ensure proper washing and sanitisation of hands before, during, and after patient contact, before carrying out aseptic tasks, after touching surroundings, and after coming in contact with bodily fluids. Therefore, it is essential to monitor and audit these practices to meet the highest possible standards of hygiene. The chart below displays the average percentage of healthcare professionals correctly washing and sanitising their hands before and after patient contact and other activities, indicating that there is room for improvement. Nevertheless, the initiatives implemented by Sandra Longford and her team along with the quiz at the end of the presentation should help educate on infection prevention and control..

[Audio] In clinical areas, it is important for staff to present a smart and professional image. This means wearing the correct approved uniform and having forearms completely uncovered. Furthermore, NHS Approved ID badges MUST be worn. For those not working in patient areas, lanyards with safety breakaway clips are allowed. All these measures help to ensure infection prevention and control in clinical areas..

CLINICAL AREA A clinical area is defined as where patients are examined or undergo clinical procedures, this also includes any interaction with patients, Patient notes, and patient areas.

All staff working within the trust are expected to present a smart & professional image.  Staff MUST wear the correct approved uniform and be below the elbows when working in or entering a clinical environment.  To facilitate effective hand hygiene sleeves must be either rolled up or at a length that leaves the forearms completely uncovered.  No wrist watches or jewellery is to be worn below the elbow other than a single plain wedding band. NHS Approved ID badges MUST be worn. Staff not working in patient areas may wear lanyards. These must have a safety breakaway clip.

A smart professional image is to be portrayed by everyone who is employed by the trust.

Hair  Hair should be clean, neat & tidy.  Long Hair should be tied back and off the collar when working within a clinical area. Male staff must be either clean shaven or beards and Mustaches kept well maintained.  Jewellery Visible body piercing for instance on ears, eyebrows, lips and noses are permitted with small discreet studs. (The security of any jewellery that an employee has been asked to remove remains the responsibility of the wearer). Nails All staff should keep fingernails short, clean and neat. Staff working in a clinical environment or wearing trust uniform are not permitted to wear nail varnish including shellac, false nails, extensions or nail jewellery. (Varnish will be requested to be removed if recorded wearing whilst on shift – Reports will be issued if policy is not followed.   Footwear All shoes should be clean, and in good condition, Plain, non-slip and wipeable. Open backed shoes, Crocs and vented shoes are not permitted.

[Audio] "Smoking is a dangerous habit and has a serious impact on our health. That's why it's not allowed in SDEC hospitals. Staff must also not be seen smoking while in their uniform, either close to or away from hospital premises. The same rule applies to e-cigarettes and vaping pens. Violations of this policy will not be tolerated and will be reported. Let's all work together to ensure the health and safety of our hospitals. Thank you..

It is NOT acceptable for staff to be seen smoking in uniform either close to or away from hospital premises. Staff wishing to smoke during working hours MUST change out of their uniform before doing so. (This also applies to e-cigarettes and vaping pens. (Reports will be issued if policy is not followed)

[Audio] Discussing the importance of correctly decontaminating reusable medical devices to prevent the spread of infection is the objective of today's discussion. Sandra Longford, Senior Clinical Support and Infection Prevention & Control Champion & Link Advisor for SDEC, is responsible for guiding other staff in effective decontamination protocols. Reusable pieces of patient care equipment must be decontaminated before and after each use to ensure safe systems of work and prevent transmission of infectious agents. All employees must be aware of their roles and responsibilities to ensure patient equipment does not serve as a reservoir for transmission of infectious agents. To better understand the importance of decontamination, let us review the material provided and take the quiz at the end..

Safe and effective decontamination of equipment between patients is an essential part of standard precautions.      All employees must be clear as to their role and responsibilities in relation to the decontamination of reuseable medical devices. If unclear, advise can be sought from line managers or the Infection Prevention and control Team.       It is the responsibility for ALL staff to effectively decontaminate reusable pieces of patient care equipment, before & after each use.       Patient equipment may serve as a reservoir for the transmission of infectious agents to susceptible hosts. To ensure safe systems of work and to prevent transmission of infectious agents it is essential that the decontamination of patient equipment is carried out in accordance with the requirements of The Health and safety at work Act.     We have regular Cleaning Audits – Lets hit 100%

[Audio] "Today, we will focus on understanding the importance of segregating infectious and non-infectious waste. This is absolutely essential in preventing the spread of infection and protecting the health and safety of both our staff and patients. We have to be aware of the potential risks associated with clinical waste, and ensure that it is safely handled and disposed of. Infectious waste is classified by the colour black and includes items like healthcare waste, disposable PPE, and tissues. Non-infectious waste is further divided into Tiger Stripe and Domestic, and includes things like paper towels and food waste. We must ensure that all of these materials are kept separate and handled correctly to prevent any spread of infection. Have a look at the images on the slide to get a better understanding of what to look out for. Thank you..

Healthcare waste has the potential to be toxic, hazardous and/or infectious.  All staff have a  ‘duty of care’ to ensure that waste must be segregated, handled, transported and disposed of in an appropriate manner to ensure it does not harm staff, patients, the public or the environment.

[Audio] Sharps must be disposed of with extreme caution. When discarding them, they should be placed in an approved container at the point of use. All sharps bins must have a label denoting the assembly date. Never transfer sharps from one person to another and do not handle them beyond what is necessary. Furthermore, needles should never be re-sheathed and the bins should not be filled beyond the designated 'full line.' It is also of the utmost importance that no general waste is placed in the sharps bins. If sharps are not disposed of correctly, it can lead to severe injury, known as a sharps injury..

Sharps must always be disposed of at the point after use into an approved container. All sharp’s bins should have date of assembly on label.  Do not pass sharps from one person to another. Do not handle sharp’s more than is essential. Do not re-sheath needles. Do not fill bins past the ‘full line’ marked on the bin. Do not place general waste in the sharp's bins…

Injuries from sharps in medical procedures such as syringes, scalpels, lancets. All Needlestick injuries should be reported to Occupational health. REMEMBER : Squeeze, Wash, Dry & Report

[Audio] In order to maintain a safe environment in a medical setting, it is essential that medical personnel are equipped with the right materials and equipment to protect against injury. Gloves should be worn when touching patients, and hands should be washed afterwards. Masks should be worn in situations where particles could easily spread and should be changed regularly. Goggles and eye protection must be used during any procedures that involve splashing or spraying of potentially infected materials. Aprons must also be worn in order to protect clothing from contamination. When selecting Personal Protective Equipment or PPE, make sure that it is correctly fitting and comfortable..

The law says individuals should be provided with the correct materials and equipment to protect them from injury. Gloves are not a substitute for handwashing and are not 100% impervious, therefore, hands must be washed before gloves are put on and after they are taken off.  Masks are to protect staff from small particles (Nuclei) that travel longer distances.  These become less effective over time and should be changed frequently. Masks for isolated patients should be used once and then disposed of. Goggles and eye protection, are suggested to be worn for any procedure where splashing or spraying of blood or any other contaminated material is likely. Aprons are to protect uniform and contamination from blood and bodily fluids. PPE should be disposed of after contact with each patient.

[Audio] Protection from infection is essential in any healthcare setting. To minimize the risk of exposure to blood and bodily fluids, hand hygiene must be practiced, protective clothing must be worn, and waste materials must be disposed of properly. Additionally, it is important to clean any contaminated surfaces or malleable equipment used. Other areas that may become contaminated such as toilets, washbasins and door handles must also be regularly and thoroughly cleaned to reduce the risk of them becoming reservoirs for micro-organisms.. 

Scene 13

Blood and bodily fluids can potentially contain viruses or other pathogens. Therefore, Dealing with spills of blood or bodily fluid may expose the healthcare worker to these blood borne viruses and spills must be dealt with swiftly, safely and effectively. It must always be assumed that any blood from any person poses a potential risk and consequently the safe and effective management of such spillages is essential.

Areas of importance are those shared by different people, Toilets, wash basins, door handles that can become contaminated with blood, other bodily fluids, secretions and excretions during a delivery of care. In order to reduce the risk of  such areas becoming possible reservoirs for harmful micro-organisms that could lead to the contamination of both staff and the patient, good housekeeping must be undertaken.

The Chlorine Releasing Agents (CRA’s) that are required in the management of a spillage are regulated under the Control of substances Hazardous to Health regulations (COSHH) and healthcare staff must follow written guidance within the product data sheet.

[Audio] Laundry can be a source of infection, but preventive measures can be taken to help reduce the spread. Item of linen such as bedding, towels, clothing and curtains can all become infected, so handling of dirty linen should be kept to a minimum. To further reduce the chance of contamination, protective clothing like aprons and gloves should be worn. Additionally, any accumulated laundry should be quickly removed and stored above floor level in a separate room. Linen bag holders should also be cleaned daily to reduce the risk of cross contamination..

Linen is any item made of cloth, and includes bed linen, towels, clothingg and curtains all infected linen should be separated from all other items and where appropriate, water-soluble membrane bags should be used. The minimum handling of infected linen is recommended, and aprons and gloves must be worn Laundry should not be allowed to build up in any one area.  Linen bag holders must be cleaned daily and maintained regularly.


 Clean linen must always be stored above floor level and in a separated room to avoid cross contamination.

[Audio] Moving to the next slide, we need to look at respiratory hygiene which is a key element to preventing the spread of infectious diseases. To practice proper respiratory hygiene, we need to cover our mouth and nose with a tissue when we cough or sneeze, then dispose of the tissue immediately into a waste bin. Additionally, we need to perform hand hygiene often, which means washing our hands regularly or using hand sanitizer..

Correct Respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette is effective in decreasing the risk of transmission of pathogens contained in large respiratory droplets.
 Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing Dispose of tissues immediately into waste bin. Perform hand Hygiene frequently

Catch it  Germs spread easily, Always carry tissues and use them to catch your cough or sneeze.

Link advisors are healthcare staff selected by their managers to receive additional training in Infection prevention and control.  The key role of link staff is to develop best practice within their clinical Area.

[Audio] In this presentation, we are exploring ways to prevent infection. We need to understand the basics of infection control, so let's begin with some questions. When handling infected linen, wearing gloves and aprons, and removing the gloves when finished, is one point. Disinfecting equipment so as to reduce the number of microorganisms present is another. For disposing of clinical waste, red is the colour bag to use. Carrying out patient care does not require wearing any of the items mentioned on the hands, this is one point. Lastly, managing blood and bodily fluids is not included in the standard infection control precautions, also one point. To conclude, preventing infection requires knowledge and diligence. Protection from infection is essential in any healthcare setting

To minimize the risk of exposure to blood and bodily fluids, hand hygiene must be practiced, protective clothing must be worn, and waste materials must be disposed of properly

Additionally, it is important to clean any contaminated surfaces or malleable equipment used

Other areas that may become contaminated such as toilets, washbasins and door handles must also be regularly and thoroughly cleaned to reduce the risk of them becoming reservoirs for micro-organisms.

Laundry can be a source of infection, but preventive measures can be taken to help reduce the spread

Item of linen such as bedding, towels, clothing and curtains can all become infected, so handling of dirty linen should be kept to a minimum

To further reduce the chance of contamination, protective clothing like aprons and gloves should be worn

Additionally, any accumulated laundry should be quickly removed and stored above floor level in a separate room

Linen bag holders should also be cleaned daily to reduce the risk of cross contamination.

Moving to the next slide, we need to look at respiratory hygiene which is a key element to preventing the spread of infectious diseases

To practice proper respiratory hygiene, we need to cover our mouth and nose with a tissue when we cough or sneeze, then dispose of the tissue immediately into a waste bin

Additionally, we need to perform hand hygiene often, which means washing our hands regularly or using hand sanitizer.
