Scene 3 (18s)

What is the definition of Perception? According to the oxford dictionary, “Perception is the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses”. It is the way of regarding, understanding or interpreting something, a mental impression, intuitive and insight. (Bradley&Murray,1915).

Scene 4 (34s)

Explain how perception can lead to misunderstanding or conflict. Perception can lead to conflict and misunderstanding because of several factors: 1. Not applying the three steps of perception checking, 2. Barriers to effective communication 3. Poor self-reflection 4. Poor critical thinking..

Scene 5 (50s)

Provide a personal or work example of misperception that led to a conflict or misunderstanding. Work example scenario. Maria Sigma, a 17-year old client whom a nurse first met in the admission unit was just nodding to her nurse when asked questions. When did you have your last menstrual period? She nods. Where do you live? She nods. What are your hobbies? She nods. The nurse left and quite annoyed. It led to conflict because she can’t get information and the nurse thought “I think she’s shy”. Maybe, I will make up an answer for this questions. Source of misperception is poor self reflection and not doing perception checking..

Scene 6 (1m 19s)

Correctly identify the 3 steps of the perception-checking. Step 1 : Describe what you see. -Specific and neutral. In the work example, Maria does not respond to questions of the nurse. She always nod. Step 2: Give two possible perceptions: Neither has to be right and shows you are open. Maria can be shy. Maria can have hearing problem. Maria cannot speak or understand English. Step3: Ask for clarification.-Allows for re-interpretation of the situation and clarifies what is happening from the client’s viewpoint. The nurse brought with her communication board and picture so as to communicate with Maria. She also brought a colleague who is from China and translated to Maria what she was asking. The nurse colleague also transmitted Maria’s response in all of the questions..

Scene 7 (1m 53s)

Explain how perception-checking can help avoid misperception and conflict. Perception checking is a strategy that allows us to monitor our perceptions of and our reactions to other people. It is so important to apply the 3 steps of perception checking to avoid conflict/ Critical thinking and self reflection can help nurses overcome perceptual biases which are human tendencies that interfere with accurately perceiving and interpreting messages, attitudes and values from other people. (Potter et.al,2024,p274).
