[Audio] Writing Process. The writing process for a first draft begins with brainstorming and gathering ideas. This phase often involves jotting down any thoughts that come to mind, conducting research if needed, and forming an outline to organize the main points and structure of the piece. Once the foundation is set, the next step is to focus on writing the first draft itself. The goal at this stage is not perfection but simply to get the ideas onto the page. It's important to let the writing flow without worrying about spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes, as the focus should be on developing the content and fleshing out the structure. Writing without self-censorship helps keep the momentum going and prevents feeling stuck. After the initial draft is complete, the next step is to take a break and then return to it with fresh eyes. This allows for revisions and improvements to be made in terms of clarity, organization, tone, and overall coherence. The first draft is an important starting point, but it's only through revisions and refining that the final product will emerge..

[Audio] First Drafts. For my drafts I typically started the same way every time. I would read the topic carefully then I would start a free write usually on my own computer or at the UNC library where I could concentrate the most. Then when I was done free writing I will edit it and take out everything I didn't need. Once the draft is complete, I step away for a bit before returning to revise. During revision, I refine the structure, improve clarity, and correct any errors in grammar or punctuation. I continue to revise until the piece feels polished and cohesive, ensuring that the message is clear and well supported throughout. When I finish with that I would either take my draft to the UNC Writing Center so they can review it or have my friends that are good writers review it. This was really helpful for my first drafts because it would let me get really good feedback on things I missed. Here are a few pictures of where I did my writing..

[Audio] Peer Reviews. I did two peer reviews out of three missing one because I was confused on how to complete but they were very helpful. Peer reviews are incredibly helpful because they provide valuable, objective feedback from individuals who are not as closely tied to the writing, offering a fresh perspective. Often, when writers are too familiar with their own work, they can miss areas that are unclear, underdeveloped, or need improvement. Peers can point out these issues, helping the writer to recognize and address them. In addition to identifying weaknesses, peer reviewers can also highlight strengths in the writing, reinforcing what works well and giving the writer confidence in their approach. Peer feedback also encourages critical thinking and reflection, as it forces the writer to evaluate their choices and consider how their work is perceived by others. Furthermore, the process fosters collaboration, as writers may gain new insights, ideas, or solutions that they hadn't thought of before. Engaging in peer review can also improve writing skills overall, as reviewing others' work allows a writer to learn from both the strengths and mistakes of their peers. The back and forth exchange helps create a sense of community and shared learning, ultimately leading to better quality writing and a deeper understanding of the writing process. Moving forward I'll make sure to do all the peer reviews without worry about my drafts being judged..

[Audio] Reflection. At the end of this English course, my writing process has undergone a significant transformation. In the beginning, I would often dive straight into writing without much planning or outlining, and I would focus mainly on getting my ideas onto the page without worrying about structure or coherence. Over the course of the class, however, I've learned the importance of spending more time on prewriting and outlining. I now recognize that organizing my thoughts and creating a clear structure before starting the first draft helps me stay focused and ensures my ideas are presented logically. Additionally, I've become much more comfortable with the revision process. Previously, I viewed the first draft as the final product, but I now understand that revision is key to improving clarity, strengthening arguments, and enhancing the overall flow of the piece. Peer feedback has also played a crucial role in my growth as a writer. I've learned to approach critiques with an open mind, using them to identify areas of improvement that I may have missed on my own. This has shifted my mindset from just completing assignments to genuinely refining my work and producing writing that is clear, effective, and engaging. Moreover, I've become more attentive to the finer details of writing, such as sentence structure, tone, and word choice. These elements, which I once overlooked, now play a vital role in my revision process, helping me create more polished and coherent pieces. Overall, this course has given me a deeper understanding of the writing process and a greater appreciation for the time and effort required to produce strong, thoughtful work..

[Audio] Conclusion. This English course has significantly changed the way I view writing by helping me understand that writing is not just about putting words on paper but a process of thinking, revising, and refining. Initially, I saw writing as a task to complete, focusing mostly on meeting deadlines or finishing assignments. However, through this course, I've learned that writing is a dynamic process that involves planning, drafting, and revising multiple times to create a clear and compelling piece. I've come to appreciate the importance of structure, organization, and the development of ideas in a way that makes my writing more purposeful and engaging. This shift in mindset will help me in the future, as I now recognize that effective writing is a crucial skill in almost every career and aspect of life. Whether in professional emails, reports, or persuasive communications, the ability to clearly express ideas and refine them for the intended audience is essential. Writing is also a key part of problem solving and critical thinking, skills that will serve me well in both academic and real world situations. Ultimately, I now see writing as a skill that requires continuous effort, patience, and self reflection, and I understand that the process is just as important as the final product. This course has prepared me to approach writing in a more thoughtful, effective way, which will undoubtedly benefit me in the future..
