This issue needs to be addressed urgently, as access to water is currently a source of potential conflict, affecting geopolitical discourses and leading to security challenges in the region. We are actively researching the root causes of the situation, and developing solutions that ensure its sustainability. [Audio] Scarcity of water in Central Asia is an ever increasing challenge, one that may lead to further violence and conflict. Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union, access to freshwater has been a significant contributor to geopolitical debates, particularly in terms of the security of the region. This study seeks to explore these issues in greater detail..

Water availability represents a major challenge for the five Central Asian countries and is increasingly exacerbated by climate change. This has led to violence in the region, bearing the risk of further conflict1. In order to compensate the scarcity of scientific literature on the issue, this paper analyses the role of freshwater as a natural resource that has been generating conflicts in Central Asia since the collapse of the Soviet Union as well as the conflicts themselves2. The water conflict of Central Asia over the years is having an impact on the broader geopolitical discourses of this region which in turn is also having an impact on the securitisation of the region3
