Define the four modes of delivery. Explain the main features of each mode. Identify situations where each mode can be used. State one advantage and one limitation of each mode. Choose the most suitable mode for a given speaking situation.

What is a Mode of Delivery?. A mode of delivery is the way a speaker presents a speech to an audience..

A mode of delivery is the way a speaker presents a speech to an audience.

It affects how prepared the speaker is and how closely the speaker follows written notes. The four common modes are: Extemporaneous, Impromptu, Memorized and Manuscript. Choosing the right mode depends on the purpose, audience, topic and situation.

1. Extemporaneous Delivery. Prepared, but not read word-for-word..

The speaker researches and practices the speech before presenting it. The speaker uses brief notes, keywords or an outline as a guide. The wording can change naturally while speaking. Advantages: sounds natural, allows eye contact and audience interaction. Limitation: requires preparation and practice.

2. Impromptu Delivery. A speech given with little or no preparation..

The speaker responds immediately to a topic or situation. The speaker usually relies on knowledge, experience and quick thinking. Example: being asked to give a short opinion during a class discussion. Advantages: quick and spontaneous. Limitation: ideas may be less organized and the speaker may feel nervous.

3. Memorized Delivery. A speech learned and presented from memory..

The speaker prepares the complete speech beforehand. The speaker practices until the speech can be delivered without notes. Often used for poems, dramatic performances, speeches and ceremonial presentations. Advantages: no notes are needed and delivery can look polished. Limitation: forgetting a part can interrupt the flow; it can also sound less natural if over-rehearsed.

4. Manuscript Delivery. A speech read directly from a written text..

The speech is written out in full before delivery. The speaker follows the exact wording on the page or screen. Often used when accuracy is very important, such as formal announcements or official statements. Advantages: precise wording and fewer chances of leaving out important information. Limitation: reading can reduce eye contact and make delivery sound less conversational.
