Sadly, successful transitions are not a reality for many people with disability.  Often, they experience:

Why? The reasons for these outcomes may be complex

However, people with disability are often misrecognised as ‘not capable’ and may be missing out

through the concept of  capacity to aspire

aspirations for the future are informed by everyday life

and formed through interactions in social life

individuals access their economic, social and cultural resources

to create imaginary routes into their future

or what Appadurai calls  “map of aspirations”

The more opportunities individuals have to explore their future

The more they populate their map with nodes and pathways

The more familiar they become in navigating their map of the future

And share those experiences with their local networks

However, when individuals have little opportunity to explore their future

Their map will have fewer and weaker links to the future

And t he harder it is for individuals to  realise  their aspirations

The concept of navigational capacity is widely used in youth research, but remains unexplored disability research

Navigational capacity offers an alternative framework to understand student aspirations and transition experiences
