OVERVIEW. Introduction What is Literacy Literacy Skills How to improve Literacy And then there is Digital Literacy What is Numeracy Why is Numeracy Important How to improve Literacy.

Scene 3 (17s)

[Audio] Introduction Literacy and numeracy are central to lifelong learning and sustainable development. In today's fast-changing world, both skills are essential to achieving independence and wellbeing, and provide the basis for sustainable societies with constant socio-economic progress. In maths we think that all pupils who leave primary school should be fluent in addition, subtraction, long multiplication and division, and be able to work with fractions, decimals and percentages. In English, we think that all pupils should be able to read fluently and write accurately and coherently. These skills set them up to succeed and flourish in secondary school and access a broad and balanced curriculum..

[Audio] LITERACY is understanding, evaluating, using, and engaging with written text to participate in the society, to achieve one's goals and to develop one's knowledge and potential..

LITERACY SKILLS.

Scene 7 (3m 15s)

[Audio] WHY IS LITERACY IMPORTANT Being literate will give you the ability to make your own choices in life. If you are not literate, it is easy for other people to determine your future without you knowing about it. For a democracy to work properly, people have to be literate. Being literate is important to a person's independence because if you're not able to make your own decisions in life, you're going to need someone else to help you Being literate also gives you the ability to gain new skills and knowledge. By being literate you can learn new things, simply because you're literate. If you can't read or write, it makes it very difficult for you to gain additional knowledge since you won't be able to read about what is going on around us in the world. Literacy helps keep you up to date with what's going on in the world. If you are literate in your religion, it will allow you to better understand what others believe in when it comes to their religion. Literacy in your religion can help clear up any misconceptions that you may have about what other people believe..

Scene 8 (4m 23s)

[Audio] WHY IS LITERACY IMPORTANT Being literate opens up your mind, allows you to think more creatively. Being literate also opens the door to new relationships and business opportunities because it allows you to be able to communicate with others without the use of hand gestures. Being literate gives you the ability to make your own healthcare decisions and allows you to learn about your own body. If you don't know how to read or write, it makes it very difficult for you to understand what's going on with your body and where the pain is coming from. Being literate also opens doors when it comes to job opportunities, you can write things down without having them dictated. If you want to be part of the workforce, being literate allows you the chance to find a career that makes use of your abilities and accommodates them. Being literate allows each one of us to have a stronger sense of identity, without literacy we wouldn't be able to write anything down or read books that help us understand ourselves better Being literate can help improve your self-confidence in different situations because if you can read and write you can essentially do anything in life. Literacy can make you more successful in life and help you accomplish your goals and dreams because of the opportunities it can provide for you..

Scene 9 (5m 41s)

[Audio] And then there is digital literacy. And then there is digital literacy.

Scene 10 (5m 50s)

DIGITAL LITERACY.

Scene 11 (8m 24s)

[Audio] NUMERACY. NUMERACY. abstract. abstract. abstract.

Scene 12 (8m 33s)

[Audio] Numeracy is the ability to access, use, interpret, and communicate mathematical information and ideas, to engage in and manage mathematical demands of a range of situations in adult life..

Scene 13 (8m 47s)

WHY IS NUMERACY IMPORTANT.

Scene 14 (10m 43s)

[Audio] Estimate more: The goal with estimation isn't to provide an exact answer. It's to provide one precise enough that it allows you to make useful predictions. Learn geometry:When you go shopping for a new piece of furniture or appliance, you need to understand the measurements of the object relative to the space that you'll be placing it in. The better your intuitive grasp of spatial relationships, the easier it will be to do other things that we don't quite attribute to math skills Improve financial skills:Many people are terrified to look at their spending habits. They don't want to confront the true nature of their financial situation. However, doing so will not only improve the quality of your life but will also increase your basic numeracy skills.Budgeting only requires basic math skills, but it's an area where the quality of your decision-making and data analysis is directly tied to outcomes in your life. You're able to clearly see why you're having problems in your life and make decisions based on the numbers you crunched..

Scene 15 (11m 50s)

[Audio] Learn to interpret graphs: Graphs allow you to correlate the change in two quantities with a visual representation. This is useful for developing the intuition to tell if there's a relationship between two quantities. Scrutinize media: Teen pregnancy in our town is up 100% (This is a lot scarier than saying "last year we have two teen pregnancies, this year we have 4)The goal isn't to become an expert statistician. It's simply to become aware of how people rely on your lack of numeracy development to try to influence you. By remedying this lack of knowledge and skill with numbers, you set yourself up to be more informed and less fooled by randomness. Play math games:Any math activity that can be gamified will improve your numeracy skills if for no other reason than you make it fun. One of the favorite math games to play in everyday life takes place when I'm shopping. When you pay with physical money, and try to beat the cash register to figure out what my change will be. It's a fun game that also improves my budgeting skills as well..
