Introduction. Liberalism is a family of doctrines that emphasize the value of freedom and hold that the just state ensures freedom for individuals. Liberal feminists embrace this value and this role for the state and insist on freedom for women. Giddens (2001:692) defines liberal theory as a: Feminist theory that believes gender inequality is produced by reduced access for women and girls to civil rights and allocation of social resources such as education and employment..

Cont. The theory is in support of the democratic social way of living where free markets, civil rights, gender equality and equal voting rights is mainly centralised on the benefit of women In liberal community opportunities are available to make or produce a positive impact on the society The whole theory rotates around “liberty and equality” in females.

Aspects to look at. There are certain angles we view the liberal theory under which are noted below Social Abortion pro choice Affirmative action favour Guns pro gun control Economic Spending on social programmes Regulation favour of.

Advantages and Disadvantages. Pros Shows that gender inequalities can be solved without the use of violence Focuses on socialisation and attitude changing Better access to education More freedom to women Freedom of vote is encouraged May make leaving an unhappy marriage easier.

Cons. Can be criticised for being overly optimistic It ignores deep seated structure that actually affect women such as capitalism and patriarchy Excessive advantages of women Women may not be accepted in certain position Frustration of men.

Practical Application. Case of inheritance sharing among children where there is more males to females Case of early child marriages Cases where female children are not allowed to be educated Cases where females children are used for paying of debts.
