[Audio] Adult education learning theories Kayle Bowen ECW 3064.
[Audio] Andragogy is the theory of helping and allowing for adult learning. Adult learning is independent learning that requires problem solving, discussion, and teacher directed lessons for students to gain a successful understanding. Adult learners are experienced and come from a variety of different educational backgrounds which allow for an intrinsic motivation to learn..
[Audio] An example of andragogy would be a student who has not completed high school looking for resources to prepare them for the GED test. The student may do an online course that will prepare them with high school level skills in order to complete their GED to further their career..
[Audio] I believe this theory Is important for adult learners because it allows them to further their education without a degree being necessary. Many adults did not have the education they wished they could have gotten due to family/personal circumstances as a child. The theory of andragogy helps adult learners who are independent and motivated to learn..
[Audio] Self-directed learning is when learners are the managers of their own learning process without help from others. In self-directed learning students plan and participate in their own learning, they development time management and problem-solving skills by being independent in their own learning journey..
[Audio] An example of self-directed learning would be a single mom who wants to get her GED so she studies on her own whenever she finds the time to. She sets aside time to learn, and she decides what methods, tools, and resources she will use to learn. This learner is self-motivated and responsible for her own goals in her learning journey..
[Audio] This theory is important because I believe you must have self-motivation in order to learn in any setting. Everyone learns at their own pace however, if you are not willing to learn then you will not reach your goals as quickly as someone who is self-motivated. Self-reflection and goal-setting is important for anyone beginning self-directed learning..
[Audio] Transformational learning is a shift in awareness about learning and reflection on their learning. Transformational learners will have a growth in complexity and be open to new actions and perspectives. Transformational learners will grow in their listening skills and their recognition..
[Audio] An example of transformational learning would be a student learning about new religions and cultures which allow them to question their own beliefs and their own culture by seeing their world in a whole new way, simply by gaining more perspective. This learner may expand their understanding in a deeper way in order to better understand the world around them..
[Audio] I believe this theory of learning is the most important of them all. This theory involves deepening our knowledge in order to be more understanding and critically think about the world around us. We need this skill more than any other in today's society so that we can all become more empathetic about each-others different beliefs, upbringing, and experiences..
