About. Uttarkashi is the northernmost district of Utarakhand at an height of 1,158 meters above sea level with an area of 8,016 sqkm. It is surrounded by mountains, and river Bhagirathi flows through it..

In the north  is the country of China, in the east is district Chamoli, in south is the district of Tehri, and on west is the state of Himachal and district Dehradun.

The Hershil Valley, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Dodi Tal, Kashi Vishwanath temple, Gartang Gali, and 24 other major tourist spots recognised by the distict.

The weather is moderately cold with temperature range of -2°C to 20°C in the month of January and June respectively. Coldwaves are common. Annual rainfall is 1,902 mm and it receives 3,110 hours of sunlight annually.

Agriculture and Horticulture. Agriculture is the major growth driver, it provides employment to 80% of population and contributes 25% to DDP (district domestic production). The district is rich in cattle wealth, and is famous for its Apple production..

Tourism& hospitality is another major sector and after agriculture the largest employer. Road trasport through cabs, homestays, hotels, restaurants are high in demand especially during Yatra season (char dham yatra).

Real estate and construction is major growing sector in the district. After the char dham road project construction has increased in the district.

Challenges. Covid-19. Corona pandemic has slowed down the economic growtth of the district..

9 Villages have become completely ghost and many are on the verge of being ghosted.

The seasonal unemployment and lack of opportunities in the district for skilled labour.

Migration and reverse migration are the major concerns for the district. Lack of employment opportunities and education are the main reasons of migration.

The literacy of district is 75% however in many villages the literacy is far below this number. eg: The literacy of village near Dodi tal is 45%.

The road connectivity is affected during monsoon, there is no railway station, no cinema house, or scheduled flights to the district.

Potential Opportunity. Manpower. Due to reverse migration during covid times, there is excess of manpower that can be utilised to build permanent infrastructure..

Two of the four char dhams are in Uttarkashi, that attracts great footfall. By improving on logistics and infrastructure the sector can further grow.

Horticulture has grown over the years nationwide, because of the expanding middle class segment the demand for horticulture products will increase.

Agriculture has grown steadily over the years. Setting up of Mandis can increase the growth further as the farmer would sell directly in the district.

Hospitality segment has the potential to grow 4x due to the two major government initiates being taken in the district.

The government is building a char dham corridor which promises to improve road connectivity to the district also a railway line from Dehradun to Maneri has been proposed which will bring tourists from the most populous city of Uttarakhand which is Dehradun.

Homestays as a solution for uneven balance

There is already a well established homestay eco-system of 500+ stays which has the potential to generate employment, prevent migration, ensure livelihood to 2000+ locals by leveraging government initiatives.
