[Audio] Today we will cover Insulin administration.
[Audio] Lets review the 10 rights of medication administration per the college of nurses Right patient- verify the identity of your resident by using at least 2 identifiers Right Medication –double check the medication label against the medication order, check the expiry date as well Right Dose- calculate the correct dose based on the medication order Right route- administer the medication via the prescribed route, be aware of specific administration requirements Right time- administer medications at the scheduled time Right documentation- record medication administration accurately and promptly in the residents medical record Right reason- verify the reason for administering the medication based on residents condition and healthcare provider's orders Right to refuse- respect the residents autonomy and inform them about the medications purpose and potential side effects, if resident refuse's the medication, document their decision Right Assessment- assess the residents allergies, current medications before administering medication, monitor for any contradictions or adverse reactions Right education- provide resident education about the medication, including how to take it, potential side effects and or any special instructions.
[Audio] Before administering any medication or treatment, wash your hands.
[Audio] Stgep 1- gather the insulin from the fridge or resident's carrier bin in the medication cart If the insulin is milky, roll back and forth in your palms to reconstitute the medication Check the expiry date, this is also posted in the med rooms for the different types of insulin Ensure there is a date opened label on the insulin pen.
[Audio] Apply the needle tip to the insulin pen. Step 2: Apply the needle tip.
[Audio] If using the insulin pen for the first time, the insulin pen must be primed. You will dial the pen to 3 units and press the plunger to dispense insulin for the needle tip. This may be required at each use, follow the home's policy. For Ozempic you will dial till you see drops, then push the plunger to dispense the liquid from the needle tip.
[Audio] Dial the pen to the correct amount of units to be administered. Double check to ensure the correct amount is set to e administered against the E-MAR.
[Audio] Remember to always rotate injection sites. Most insulin is administered in the abdomen, make sure to stay 2 inches away from the umbilicus..
[Audio] Select area, gently pinch area of skin for the injection. Insert needle at a 90 degree angle, slow and steady depress the plunger to dispense the medication After injection complete, leave needle in place for 10 seconds Remove insulin pen at a 90 degree angle It is normal to see a small drop of blood.
[Audio] Dispose of needle head in the sharps container. Return insulin pen to resident's carrier bin in the med cart.
[Audio] Wash your hands. Alcohol gel.
[Audio] Document promptly and accurately.. Step 8: Document accordingly and promptly.
