Automation and Robotics What is Automation Automation means using technology and machines to do work instead of using human hands. It is different from simple mechanisation because mechanisation only replaces human muscle with a machine while automation connects everything into a system that controls itself. The most important part of an automated system is something called a feedback loop which lets the machine check its own work and fix its mistakes without a person helping. This whole process happens in three easy steps which are measurement, evaluation, and control. In the first step called measurement the machine uses sensors like light detectors, weight scales, and temperature meters to gather facts about the world around it. In the second step called evaluation a small computer called a controller takes this information and compares it to the target number which is called the set point. In the third step called control if the machine sees a difference between the real world and the target number it tells parts called actuators to change their settings and fix the process. Advantages and Disadvantages of Automation Using automated systems changes how factories and businesses work because machines can do many things much better than people can. First of all machines are excellent at very difficult tasks like controlling all the traffic lights in a big city or driving an airplane on autopilot because they can read a lot of information at the same time. Second machines can make decisions much faster than humans can which helps fast military planes fly very low to the ground and turn quickly if they see an obstacle. Third machines do not get tired or bored so they are perfect for boring and repetitive jobs like packing boxes or sorting items on a moving belt for many hours without making mistakes. Fourth machines can go into highly dangerous places where humans would get hurt or die such as deep underwater pipelines, outer space, or rooms filled with poison gas and bombs. However automation also has bad points because if the computer software has a mistake or a part breaks the whole system can stop working completely and cause a big accident. This means that human workers are still very important because we need smart people with special training to watch the machines and fix them when things go wrong. Programmable Logic Controllers A Programmable Logic Controller, which people call a PLC, is a very tough computer that is made to work inside dirty and noisy factories where it is very hot, dusty, or shaking. This special computer has three main sections which are the power supply, the Central Processing Unit, which people call the CPU, and the input and output section, which people call the I/O section. The power supply section takes electricity from the wall and changes it into the right type of power for the computer parts inside. The Central Processing Unit is the actual brain of the computer that looks at the inputs, runs the program, and changes the outputs very fast in just a few milliseconds. The CPU uses a simple programming language called ladder logic because the program on the screen looks like a ladder with long side bars and steps called rungs that show how wires connect things. The input and output section connects the PLC to the real world using digital parts like buttons that turn on and off or analogue parts like temperature meters that send a changing stream of electricity that the computer must translate into numbers..
Robots in Manufacturing and How They Work Robots in Manufacturing Industrial robots have become very popular in factories because they work faster than people and cost much less money over time. These factory robots usually do four main types of jobs which are movement, processing, assembly, and inspection. Movement means moving materials from one place to another like taking a box off a shelf and putting it on a wooden pallet using special robotic hands called grippers that hold the items tight without breaking them. Processing means using a tool on the end of the robot arm to change a product like using a welder to join pieces of metal together or a spray gun to paint a new car body. Assembly means putting different parts together to make a finished item where robots like to use quick methods like snapping parts together or using a pick and place action instead of trying to turn nuts and bolts which is too hard for a machine with only one arm. Inspection means quality control where the robot moves a camera or a sensor over a finished product to measure it and make sure it is perfect and exactly like the original design. How a Robot Works A robot is built very much like a human body because it uses mechanical and electronic parts to copy the way that people move and think. The physical structure of the robot is like the human skeleton and it is made of strong metal pieces called arms that are connected by moving parts called joints. These joints are like human elbows and shoulders because they give the robot different axes to spin around or move in straight lines which people call degrees of freedom. To make these arms move the robot needs a power source which can be electricity to turn small motors or a system of pumps that use pressurized oil or air to push heavy pistons up and down. The sensory system is like the eyes and ears of the robot because it uses electronic sensors and parts called encoders that count electrical pulses to see how much a joint has turned or to find obstacles in the room. The last part is the robot brain which is a strong computer that can connect to systems like Programmable Logic Controllers, which people call PLCs, or the Internet of Things, which people call IoT, to read all the sensor information and tell the motors exactly when to start and stop. Varieties and Uses of Robots Robots come in many different shapes and sizes today because engineers build them to do specific jobs in homes, factories, and battlefields. Humanoid robots are made to look exactly like people with two arms and two legs and though they cannot do much hard work yet they are being tested to help guests in hotels and hospitals. Industrial robots are the most common type and they look like big metal arms attached to the floor that do the same job over and over again very quickly and accurately inside car factories and food plants. Logistics robots are used to carry heavy boxes around big warehouses and they include Automated Guided Vehicles, which people call AGVs, that must follow colored lines painted on the floor, as well as Autonomous Mobile Robots, which people call AMRs, and Laser Guided Vehicles, which people call LGVs, that use lasers and maps to drive around people and obstacles by themselves. Appliance robots are small machines made for regular houses that do simple chores without a human helping them like a round vacuum cleaner that cleans the floor or a small lawnmower that cuts the grass. Finally remote control robots are machines that are not fully independent because a human pilot must control them from a safe distance using a screen to do dangerous things like flying military drones, exploring deep space, or helping doctors do precise medical operations on a patient..
George Orwell and His Works George Orwell Biography George Orwell was the pen name of an English writer named Eric Arthur Blair, who was born in India in 1903 and died in 1950. When he was a young man, he moved to England for school and later worked as a police officer in Burma, which was an experience that made him hate the unfair use of power. He decided to become a writer and spent years living in poverty in Paris and London to understand the difficult lives of poor and working-class people. Later, he went to Spain to fight in the Spanish Civil War against a cruel dictator, where he was badly wounded and saw how political groups could lie and abuse their power to control the public. Because of everything he witnessed in his life, Orwell spent his career writing books that warned people about the dangers of governments that take away personal freedom and try to control every part of human life. The Plot of Animal Farm Animal Farm takes place on Manor Farm, where an old prize-winning boar named Old Major gathers the animals to share his dream of a world where animals live free from human cruelty. After Old Major dies, the animals rebel against the lazy, drunken farmer Mr. Jones, chase him away, and rename the land Animal Farm. Two pigs, the fierce Napoleon and the clever Snowball, become the leaders and write the Seven Commandments of Animalism on the barn wall, which say that all animals are equal. At first, the farm is successful, and a strong, loyal cart-horse named Boxer works harder than anyone else while repeating his motto, "I will work harder." However, Napoleon and Snowball soon fight for power over a plan to build a windmill. Napoleon uses nine ferocious dogs that he raised in secret to chase Snowball off the farm forever. With Snowball gone, Napoleon takes total control and uses a smooth-talking pig named Squealer to spread lies and convince the animals that Snowball was a traitor. Napoleon blames Snowball for everything that goes wrong, including the collapse of the windmill after a storm. The pigs begin to change the commandments in secret, adding words so they can sleep in beds, drink alcohol, and kill other animals who question Napoleon's power. Boxer works until he collapses from exhaustion, and instead of helping him, the pigs secretly sell him to a horse slaughterer to buy whiskey, while Squealer lies and says Boxer died peacefully in a hospital. Years pass, and the pigs start walking on two legs, carrying whips, and acting just like humans. In the end, the barn wall has only one commandment left, which says that all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others, and when the regular animals look through the window, they cannot tell the difference between the pigs and the humans..
The Plot of 1984 1984 is set in a dark future city called London, which is part of a giant country called Oceania that is ruled by a terrifying party led by Big Brother. The government controls the citizens using telescreens that spy on them, and they use the Thought Police to arrest anyone who thinks bad thoughts about the party. The main character is Winston Smith, a quiet man who works at the Ministry of Truth, where his job is to alter historical records and old newspapers so that the party always appears to be right. Winston secretly hates the government, writes his illegal thoughts in a diary, and feels terrified of a cruel party member named O'Brien, whom he suspects might secretly hate the government too. Winston also notices a young woman named Julia who works with him, and though he fears she is a spy at first, she secretly hands him a note that says "I love you." Winston and Julia begin a secret, forbidden love affair and rent a room without a telescreen above an old shop owned by Mr. Charrington, a kind old man who sells antiques. Julia brings illegal items from the black market like real coffee and sugar, and they enjoy a small taste of freedom. Eventually, O'Brien invites Winston to his luxurious apartment and pretends to be part of a secret rebel group called The Brotherhood, giving Winston a book written by the rebel leader Emmanuel Goldstein. However, the romance ends in disaster when Mr. Charrington turns out to be a secret agent of the Thought Police, and soldiers smash through the window to arrest Winston and Julia. Winston is taken to the Ministry of Love, where he discovers that O'Brien was actually a loyal party member who tricked him to catch him. O'Brien tortures Winston for months to break his mind, teach him to doublethink, and force him to accept that two plus two equals five if the party says so. Finally, O'Brien takes Winston to the terrifying Room 101, which holds each prisoner's worst nightmare, which for Winston is hungry rats. To save himself from the rats, Winston screams and betrays Julia, shouting to let the rats eat her instead of him. Having completely destroyed his spirit, the party releases Winston back into society as a broken man who runs into Julia but feels nothing for her, and the story ends with Winston sitting alone in a cafe, looking at a picture of Big Brother, and realizing he finally loves him..
