A disruptive concept to curb road accidents

World Health Organization (WHO) data shows troubling facts about the road accidents. Death worldwide is more than  1.3 million   every year due to traffic accidents. Accumulated economic loss due to road accidents for most countries is  3% of their GDP . 93% of the death  (traffic accidents related) occurs in low and middle income countries.

Road accident situation in Pakistan is also not encouraging. In 2019-2020 Pakistan experienced  ~27 road accidents everyday .  Almost  ~15 people die  everyday in Pakistan due to road accident. Approximately  ~34 people   are injured everyday due to road accidents.

Scene 3

Social awareness campaign thru  TV broadcasting, newspaper articles, wall graffiti, and social media  posts etc.  Enforcement of existing law thru  various agencies such as police force, judicial  etc.

Awareness campaigns  make  sensible people  more mindful during driving; however,  reckless people ignore  these messages. Hefty fines and punishments  tend to  correct the drivers ; however, there is sometimes a lack of  continuous driving behavioral data  to reach a solid conclusion.

A disruptive solution to the traffic accident problem

Here, I propose an out-of-the-box solution for the traffic accident problem that will  disrupt the current system . Technologically the solution involves: Smart sensing IoT based data analytics

Strategy of the implementation of the device

Data analytic tools  can be used to define and assign a  performance rank for the driver , such as star ranking or number-based ranking. A Poorly ranked driver  can be  penalized  during the driving  license renewal  period. The insurance rate can be prorated  based on the rank of the driver assigned to the car. During the  hiring process  rank of the driver can be taken into consideration.

Scene 7

The proposed method is expected to  drastically improve  the traffic accident condition as  driver’s performance  is monitored  continuously. This data will also be helpful to better understand the  cause of road accidents  that may occur. With the help of  Artificial Intelligence (AI)  these data can be used to  predict the likelihood that a particular driver  to cause an accident.
