Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Such shifts can be natural, due to changes in the sun’s activity or large volcanic eruptions. But since the 1800s,  human activities have been the main driver of climate change , primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and  gas.Burning  fossil fuels generates greenhouse gas emissions that act like a blanket wrapped around the Earth, trapping the sun’s heat and raising temperatures. The main greenhouse gases that are causing climate change include carbon dioxide and methane. These come from using gasoline for driving a car or coal for heating a building, for example. Clearing land and cutting down forests can also release carbon dioxide. Agriculture, oil and gas operations are major sources of methane emissions. Energy, industry, transport, buildings, agriculture and land use are among the  main sectors  causing greenhouse gases.

Droughts don’t just affect water stored in wetlands, lakes, and rivers, but also water below ground stored in aquifers and in the soil. When this groundwater gets used up, the dry ground can act like a sponge, sucking surface water straight in. The surface water-groundwater relationship gets even more complicated with snowpack. If snow melts too early in the year, water can move through the environment too quickly, causing the ground to dry up and become “thirsty” too soon. So even if there is “enough” water, the timing of the water may dictate whether an area is in a  drought.Climate  change has further altered the natural pattern of droughts, making them more frequent, longer, and more severe. Since 2000, the western United States is experiencing some of the driest conditions on record. The southwestern U.S., in particular, is going through an unprecedented period of extreme drought. This will have lasting impacts on the environment and those who rely on it.

I cebergs are melting at an alarming rate due to climate change.  According to a comprehensive study, the world’s glaciers are melting at an accelerating rate .  However, new research has revealed that the nutrient-rich plumes that trail melting giant icebergs are in fact sinking carbon deep into the ocean . Iceberg production affects the mass balance of the parent ice sheets, and melting icebergs influence both ocean structure and global sea level 3 .

Chances are, if you live on Earth, you've experienced some strange, or downright dangerous, weather in the last few years. Maybe it was a heat wave that was hotter and longer than you'd ever experienced. Or a thunderstorm that dropped a scary amount of rain. Or a powerful hurricane that seemed to materialize overnight. Climate change is part of that story. Extreme weather is more likely as the Earth gets hotter.

The greenhouse effect is the way in which heat is trapped close to Earth's surface by “greenhouse gases.” These heat-trapping gases can be thought of as a blanket wrapped around Earth, keeping the planet toastier than it would be without them. Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxides, and water vapor. (Water vapor, which responds physically or chemically to changes in temperature, is called a "feedback.")   Scientists have determined that carbon dioxide's warming effect helps stabilize Earth's atmosphere. Remove carbon dioxide, and the terrestrial greenhouse effect would collapse. Without carbon dioxide, Earth's surface would be some 33°C (59°F) cooler. Greenhouse gases occur naturally and are part of our atmosphere's makeup. For that reason, Earth is sometimes called the “Goldilocks” planet – its conditions are not too hot and not too cold, but just right to allow life (including us) to flourish.  Part of what makes Earth so amenable is its natural greenhouse effect, which keeps the planet at a friendly 15  ° C (59  ° F) on average. But in the last century or so, humans have been interfering with the planet's energy balance, mainly through the burning of fossil fuels that add carbon dioxide to the air.

Climate change affects countries in different ways. Countries around the world will likely face climate change impacts that affect a wide variety of sectors, from water resources to human health to ecosystems. Impacts will vary by region and by population.  Many people in developing countries are more vulnerable to climate change impacts than people in developed countries . A changing climate affects the poorest people in developing countries the most. Droughts or heavy rains that lead to floods are disastrous to people with no buffers or savings.  A changing climate may cause major migrations of displaced peoples which will affect all countries .

Climate change can have a negative effect on animal health and welfare directly  and indirectly. More frequent and intense droughts, storms, heat waves, rising sea levels, melting glaciers and warming oceans can directly harm animals, destroy the places they live in, and wreak havoc on people’s livelihoods and communities . Rising temperatures lower many species survival rates due to changes that lead to less food, less successful reproduction, and interfering with the environment for native wildlife .  Some animals have been able to cope with rising temperatures and changing precipitation patterns, but others are having to move to avoid the impacts of climate change. In fact, scientists suspect that nearly half of the world’s species are currently shifting their ranges.

Many countries are involved in climate change. Some countries are more affected by climate change than others. According to the Climate Action Tracker, some of the countries that are taking action to combat climate change include Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Norway, The Gambia and the United  Kingdom.The  Paris Agreement is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) dealing with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year 2020. The Agreement aims to respond to the global climate change threat by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
