Overview. For my PowerPoint presentation, I am choosing the effect of simulation training that has been incorporated in nursing education the past few years. As we all know the crisis and pause Covid-19 put on our lives. During that time, I happened to be completing my nursing degree at Walters State Community College. As a nursing student during this time, we were not allowed to go to any hospitals or nursing homes because there was yet to be a vaccination out yet. It was very hard for us as students to get the experience we needed to practice our learned skills. What my school offered was the sim lab, aka simulation training on a mannequin that could talk. Yes, it was a mannequin and not a real person, but this was to help us get experience with what it would be like with real patients. As a student I always dreaded these sim labs, but looking back now it helped me develop confidence and critical thinking to be the nurse I am today..

Overview continued. For this PowerPoint, I found two articles about the simulation training. One of the articles was more geared to category’s which is qualitative but also used a survey which is quantitative as well. That article is called Effect of Computer-Based Simulator Use on Students' Self-Confidence, Satisfaction and Perceived Learning. This article surveyed thirty nursing students and categorized how satisfied they were with the simulation training. The other article used quantitative techniques on satisfaction levels of simulation training in developed countries that could afford the high technology mannequins for learning. Compare and Contrast. Comparing the two articles, they are both geared for success to help nursing students gain knowledge and confidence with simulation training. They both conclude that there are positive impacts and satisfaction with simulation training. Both articles examined students doing certain skills. In Virtual Simulation in Nursing Education it states, “ Clinical skills tasks that were examined included learning of wound care19; nasogastric tube placement20; recognition of intraoperative myocardial infarction21; clinical judgment22; phlebotomy performance23; tracheostomy care24; pediatric nursingcare25 ; and intravenous catheterization17” ( Tolarba , 2021 para. 10). These skills were similar to the skills used in the other article. In Effect of Computer-Based Simulator Use on Students’ Self-Confidence, Satisfaction and Perceived Learning, “The students participated in high-fidelity simulations (S300.105 Code Blue III 5-Year Advanced Life Support Training Simulator) including drug dose calculation and administration for the “Pediatric Drug Administration” ( Zengin , Ardahan-Zevgilli , Yardimci , Basbakkal , 2021 para. 11). Both of these articles were based on skills performed. In contrast, the two articles have some differences. The article, In Virtual Simulation in Nursing Education, has more skills performed than the other article. It also has a bigger sample of people in its study. It had 1,929 people ( Tolarba,2021 ). The simulation study was sampled with well developed countries across the world. The Effect of Computer-Based Simulator Use on Students’ Self-Confidence, Satisfaction and Perceived Learning article sampled 30 nursing students in their 3 rd year of nursing in their Pediatric class, so this was a much smaller sample ( Zengin , Ardahan-Zevgilli , Yardimci , Basbakkal , 2021). It also had less skills performed. It was based on drug calculation and administration..

Major Concepts. Both articles were studies on whether or not simulation training was a positive or negative affect on nursing students in small groups or all over the world. With both quantitative and qualitative research, both of the articles proved that virtual simulation training had a positive impact. Simulation training improves confidence and critical thinking. Simulation labs help students practice skills without having the risk of harming a live patient..

Conclusion. In conclusion, going back to my simulation training experience, it helped me with learning my nursing skills I do at my job currently everyday as a nurse. I remember as a nursing student, I was always so intimidated by sim labs. Now I’m thankful my school had this type of training because it not only had a positive impact on the students in the studies, but it did on me as well. Simulation training develops confidence, clinical-reasoning, and critical thinking. With the crisis of Covid-19, it helped not only me complete some of my clinical hours, but also others around the world. It is also used at my current job as well, but it is more computer-based learning..
