[Audio] My name is zayne brunette and this is my land acknowledgment project about the urban area of Houston Texas. Houston Is a place I have visited many times in the past few years because of the many attractions it has to offer and has intrigued me to find out more information about the population, physical features, climate, what the community is like, and the quality of life living in Houston. In my presentation I will explain all the topics I found that sparked my interest and share what Houston really has to offer from an inside perspective..
[Audio] The city of Houston Texas is a very large community with over 2.31 million residents in the year 2022 which has grown tremendously over the past couple of years because of the neighboring cities of The Woodlands and Sugar Land, Texas. 2.31 million residents make Houston the 4th largest city in the US behind New York, NY, Los Angeles, CA, and Chicago, IL. Of the 2.3 million, 1,157,680 are male while 1,159,117 are female making it very close to being about 50% each gender. Houston is very culturally diverse, making for diverse food options, activities, and exploring culture from different parts of the world. The make up of the population is as follows 41.8% white, 17.7% African American, 5% Asian and 35.1% Hispanic. Now that we know more about the population of Houston let's explore some of the physical features it has to offer..
[Audio] Due to Houston being in the South-Central region of the United States it is known for the Coastal Plains. The Coastal plains are very flat roughly around 55 feet above sea level. So, if you like the mountains Houston is not the place to visit. On the other hand, coastal plains offer other features like beaches and oceans. Houston is located 51 miles from the Gulf of Mexico making it a short drive to enjoy the ocean and the beaches. Houston is also known for the Houston shipping channels, offering easy access to imports and exports from other countries through these channels connecting to the Gulf of Mexico. Which in turn helps with Houston's supplies, food, and economy with the flow of goods through the channels. Other physical features included in the Houston area include marshes, forests, swamps, and grassland. The forests allow the area to log for a source of income for the city as well as the grassland for the cattle raised in this area for food and income. The physical features of Houston are reflected by the climate..
[Audio] Like mentioned before Houston is located near the ocean which has a huge effect on the climate and the lives of the residents. Because of the proximity of the ocean the weather in the Houston area is usually very humid. The higher temperatures they experience are the product of being located closer to the equator. With the climate being warm and humid it produces a lot of rainfall during the year. The rain, heat, and humidity produce a great climate for trees to grow as well as prairie grass which is the main type of foliage in the area as. In addition to the foliage the climate creates many swamps and marshes because of the high amount of precipitation..
[Audio] The Climograph depicted shows the average temperatures throughout the months of the year as well as the average precipitation. Explained earlier the higher temperature and the high precipitation is the reason for the climate and vegetation located in the Houston area. Because of the mild temperatures year-round makes it a very comfortable place to live and able to do more activities outside of the house. The high precipitation creates lush fields of prairies which gives cattle many places to feed for the many cattle ranches located there..
[Audio] The mild temperatures year-round provide Houston with a lot of opportunities for activities for the community to enjoy as well as tourism. Tourism is a great way for Houston to help their economy and have more opportunities for the future growth of the city. In the community of Houston one can expect to see many museums located in its own district from art to history, international cuisine because the variety of nationalities living in the area, parks to go on walks and see what Houston was like before the city was built and enjoying the beach and ocean not that far away..
[Audio] Houston has a very low quality of life in the big city due to the high amount of people. With a high population it causes some issues for instance the unemployment rate is 6.2% of the population. The reason for the high unemployment rate is because the lack of jobs to accommodate the amount of people. Because of the high unemployment rate, it causes a lot of poverty which is 19.6% in Houston. This causes a lot of homelessness in the city, my experience with the homelessness when I visited Houston, I noticed a lot of them downtown next to the business buildings and tent villages in the woods or under bridges. Because of the high poverty rate and homelessness, the crime rate is very high, 131% above the national average. The median income in the city is $53,600 which is not bad considering the cost of living is 1% lower in the city compared to the rest of the world. In conclusion, Houston has a lot to offer for activities and climate but not the best place to live in the big city..
