As the most representative inter-governmental organization of the world today, the United Nations' role in world affairs is irreplaceable by any other international or regional organizations. The United Nations has made enormous positive contributions in maintaining international peace and security, promoting cooperation among states and international development. Today, people of the world still face the two major issues of peace and development. Only by international cooperation can mankind meet the challenges of the global and regional issues. The United Nations can play a pivotal and positive role in this regard. Strengthening the role of the United Nations in the new century and promoting the establishment of a just and reasonable international political and economic order goes along with the trend of history and is in the interest of all nations. In order to strengthen the role of the United Nations, efforts should be made to uphold the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. The authority of the Security Council in maintaining international peace and security must be preserved and role of the United Nations in development area should be strengthened. To strengthen the role of the United Nations, it is essential to ensure to all Member States of the United Nations the right to equal participation in international affairs and the rights and interests of the developing countries should be safeguarded.

It was established on 24 th  October 1945. Its aims are as follows: To maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and for the suppression of acts of aggression or other breaches of the peace, and to bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations which might lead to a breach of the peace; To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, and to take other appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace; To achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion To be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations in the attainment of these common ends.

The World Health Organization (Introduction)

The  World Health Organization  ( WHO ) is a  specialized agency of the United Nations   responsible for international  public health .   The WHO Constitution, which establishes the agency's governing structure and principles, states its main objective as "the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of  health."It  is headquartered in   Geneva ,  Switzerland , with six semi-autonomous regional offices and 150 field offices worldwide. The WHO was established by constitution on 7 April 1948,   which is commemorated as  World Health Day . The first meeting of the   World Health Assembly  (WHA) , the agency's governing body, took place on 24 July 1948. The WHO incorporated the assets, personnel, and duties of the  League of Nations   Health Organization and the  Office International Hygiene  Publique , including the   International Classification of  Diseases  ( ICD) .   Its work began in earnest in 1951 following a significant  infuse.on  of financial and technical resources

The WHO's broad mandate includes advocating for universal healthcare, monitoring public health risks, coordinating responses to health emergencies, and promoting human health and well being.   It provides technical assistance to countries, sets international health standards and guidelines, and collects data on global health issues through the World Health Survey. Its flagship publication, the  World Health Report , provides expert assessments of global health topics and health statistics on all nations. The WHO also serves as a forum for summits and discussions on health issues. The WHO has played a leading role in several public health achievements, most notably the  eradication   of  smallpox , the  near- eradication of polio , and the development of an  Ebola vaccine . Its current priorities include  communicable diseases , particularly  HIV/AIDS ,  Ebola ,  malaria  and  tuberculosis ;  non-communicable diseases  such as heart disease and cancer;  healthy diet , nutrition, and  food security ;  occupational health ; and  substance abuse .

The WHA, composed of representatives from all  194 member states , serves as the agency's supreme decision-making body. It also elects and advises an Executive Board made up of  34 health specialists . The WHA convenes annually and is responsible for selecting the Director-General, setting goals and priorities, and approving the WHO's budget and activities. The current Director-General is  Tedros Adhanom , former Health Minister and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, who began his five-year term on  1 July 2017 . The WHO relies on contributions from member states (both assessed and voluntary) and private donors for funding. As of 2018, it has a budget of over  $4.2 billion , a large part of which comes from voluntary contributions from member states.   Contributions are assessed by a formula that includes GDP per capital. In 2018–19, the US contributed  15.9%  of the WHO's  $5.6  billion budget (additionally, American philanthropist   Bill Gates   provides  9.4%  of the funding through his   foundation ) the EU and its member states contributed  11% , while China contributed  0.2% .The agency is part of the  United Nations Sustainable Development Group .

The World Health Organization (Functions)

Providing leadership on matters critical to health and engaging in partnerships where joint action is needed; Shaping the research agenda and stimulating the generation, translation and dissemination of valuable knowledge; S etting norms and standards and promoting and monitoring their implementation; Articulating ethical and evidence-based policy options; Providing technical support,  catalysing  change, and building sustainable institutional capacity; Monitoring the health situation and addressing health trends. Erad icating epidemics like small pox and also organizing campaigns to fight diseases like cholera, malaria, polio and AIDS. Preparing international standards for food, biological and  pharmaceutical products.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Introduction)

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was established on  16 November 1945 . UNESCO has  195 Members  and 8 Associate Members and is governed by the General Conference and the Executive Board.  The Secretariat, headed by the Director-General, implements the decisions of these two bodies. The Organization has more than  50 field offices  around the world and its headquarters are located in  Paris . UNESCO’s mission is to contribute to the building of a culture of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information. UNESCO works to create the conditions for dialogue among civilizations, cultures and peoples, based upon respect for commonly shared values. It is through this dialogue that the world can achieve global visions of sustainable development encompassing observance of human rights, mutual respect and the alleviation of poverty, all of which are at the heart of UNESCO’s mission and activities.

UNESCO focuses on a set of objectives in the global priority areas “ Africa ” and “ Gender Equality ”. As a focal point for world culture and science, UNESCO's activities have broadened over the years to include assisting in the translating and disseminating of world literature, establishing international cooperation agreements to secure  World Heritage Sites    of  cultural   and  natural  importance, defending human rights, bridging the  worldwide digital divide , and creating inclusive knowledge societies through information and communication. UNESCO has launched several initiatives and global movements, such as  Education For All , to further advance its core objectives. UNESCO is governed by the General Conference, composed of member states and associate members, which meets biannually to set the agency's programs and the budget. It also elects members of the Executive Board, which manages UNESCO's work, and appoints every four years Director-General, who serves as UNESCO's chief administrator. UNESCO is a member of the  United Nations Development Group , a coalition of UN agencies and organizations aimed at fulfilling the  Sustainable Development Goals .

I,  Ms.Vedangi , am very grateful to the I.C.S.E board for introducing the project as a part of our syllabus. This project on the Agencies of the United Nations gave us a chance to do research/conduct a survey, to collect and organize material and make a good presentation. I am very thankful to our school for providing me the required research material and for allowing me to use school library in completing my project successfully.
