How does the number of the baffles in the heat exchanger influence heat transfer and pressure drop.

Baffles are in a heat exchanger to hold the tubes. Main application is to induce cross flow of the fluid. They are known to also create turbulence which influence heat transfer.  Maximising heat transfer is important in the heat recovery.  Also they must investigated on how they influence pressure drop. Pressure drop increasing the pumping costs.

Simscale  was used to run conjugate heat transfer in the heat exchanger. Every parameter of the heat exchanger was kept constant. Size. Inlet velocities Inlet Temperatures Pressure Outlets Only changing the number of baffles.  From 2,4,6. Then heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of all configurations.

It is seen that as the number of baffles increases, the amount of heat transferred in the heat exchanger increases.  The increase of baffle numbers introduces more turbulence.  The more heat is absorbed by the cold fluid. As the number of baffles increase the pressure drop of the shell side.  Implications of these is that to get more heat transfer through the use of baffles, increases the pressure drop meaning that more pumping power is required.

Scene 16

Increasing the number of baffles increases the amount of heat transferred.  Increasing the number of baffles increases the pressure drop.
