RAID, which stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks, is a technology that was developed about 10 years ago to improve performance and availability while storing large amounts of data without requiring improvements in disk drive technology. It comes in several levels for a variety of ways to store data.

RAID 0 Also known as data striping, RAID 0 writes data in sequential stripes across more than two drives. RAID 0 has no data redundancy, so it does not protect against data loss; however, it can dramatically improve performance because it can access several drives at once, minimising the overall seek time of larger files. The simple design of RAID 0 is easy to implement, though it should not be used for business-critical applications

RAID 1 RAID 1, or drive mirroring, works by simultaneously copying data to a second drive. This mirroring technology offers excellent data protection and delivers good performance if a mirrored drive fails. RAID 1 is the simplest RAID design. It requires a minimum of two drives with equal capacity, and the drives must be added in pairs. The main disadvantage of RAID 1 is its 100 percent disk overhead (highest of all RAID levels), which results in inefficient use of drive capacity.

RAID 5 With RAID 5, each entire data block is written on a data disk and parity information is striped across all drives. RAID 5 is the most popular of RAID levels because it delivers data protection and good performance with a small overhead for parity. RAID 5 offers the most efficient use of drive capacity of all the redundant RAID levels. It needs at least three drives of equal size, which can be added one at a time. RAID 5 has a high read transaction rate and a medium-to-high write transaction rate with a good aggregate transfer rate.

RAID 10 RAID 10 combines RAID 0 and RAID 1 by striping data across multiple drives without parity and it mirrors the entire array to a second set of drives. This process delivers good performance and excellent data protection, but cuts the usable disk space in half. RAID 10 requires a minimum of four same-size drives, and is also the most expensive RAID solution and offers limited scalability.
