[Audio] This presentation is about Ground Proximity and Warning System in the Airbus A320 GPWS is to warn pilots when flight parameters exceed the safe flight envelope. Its main purpose is to prevent controlled flight into terrain accidents. Warning and alerts are generated as a result of changes in radar altimeter heights of rate of those changes. GPWS control panel in A320 located on the left side of the overhead panel GPWS pushbuttons functions: TERR pushbutton: it inhabits the Terrain Awareness Display and Terrain Clearance Floor modes. It does not affect the basic GPWS modes 1 to 5. System push button: it affects all GPWS basic modes 1 to 5. Amber light comes on if any modes 1 to 5 malfunction Glide slope mode pushbutton: it inhabits Mode 5 which is too far below glideslope Flap mode pushbutton: inhabits mode 4 which is too low flaps Landing flap 3 : to avoid nuisance warning during aircraft landing in flap 3. It will inhabit FLAP configuration 3..

[Audio] GPWS visual warnings are provided on the MISCELLANEOUS panels. From here the maintenance crew can test the system. EGPWS terrain display. A forward-looking capability for terrain, its purpose is to display terrain elevation surrounding the aircraft in color coded to avoid controlled flight into terrain and give enough time to the crew to perform an avoidance maneuver. Terrain information is displayed on ND by selecting either one of the TERR on ND pushbutton switch which are fitted on each side of the main panel..

[Audio] Now let's talk about GPWS mode: It contains 5 basic functions and 2 advanced functions which are enhanced function of GPWS GPWS will give out warnings in the form of sounds depending on the situation. Mode 1 alerts the crew of excessive rates in descent when the aircraft senses that its coming in close contact with the ground. Mode 1 has two boundaries. Penetration of the first boundary generates a repeated aural alert " SINK RATE" and causes the GPWS lights to come on. Penetration of the second boundary generates a repetitive " PULL UP" and illuminates both PULL UP lights..

[Audio] Mode 2 warns the flight crew of excessive closure rates with rapidly rising terrain. It triggers aural and visual alerts, based on the landing gear/ flaps configuration of the aircraft, the radio height, and the RA rate of change. There are two types of Mode 2 alerts; Mode 2A (active during climb, cruise, and initial approach) and Mode 2B (active during approach and 60s after takeoff). Mode 3 warns the crew of inadvertent decants, and loss of altitude after takeoff, or during missed approach If the aircraft descends during the initial takeoff climb or during a go around, the PULL UP light comes on and the aural alerts " DON'T SINK" sounds repeatedly..

[Audio] Mode 4 provides minimum terrain clearance protentional in all phases of flight. There are three types of Mode 4 alerts, Mode 4A and Mode 4B (both active during cruise and approach), and Mode 4C active during takeoff. Mode 4A and Mode 4B trigger aural and visual alerts when terrain clearance is not sufficient based on the phase of flight, the configuration of the landing gear and the flaps, and the speed. Mode 4C triggers aural and visual alerts based on the minimum terrain clearance and the radio height of the aircraft. Mode 5 provides protection for inadvertent decent a glide slopes while on an ILS approach. GPWS monitors the flight path in relative to the glideslope centerline while on the ILS final approach course..

[Audio] Mode 6 contains altitude and bank angle callout function, its designed to increase situational awareness for the flight crew. Mode 7 is the enhanced function of the GPWS. It uses airspeed, radar altitude, barometric rate, angle of attack, air temperature, vertical and longitudinal acceleration, and aircraft – specific performance information to detect encounters with windshear. When an aircraft first encounters a strong headwind, decreasing tailwinds and vertical updrafts associated with the outflow of microburst activity, the amber GPWS windshear alert light will illuminate along with a voice alert " CAUTION, WINDSHEAR".
