[Audio] At Jamie Morgan Soccer School, we believe that successful player development involves more than teaching technical abilities. We emphasize psychological capabilities as well, helping our players cultivate the right attitude and approach to achieve their goals on the pitch. Every Thursday, we offer 1.5 hour sessions to children aged 4 to 9, providing them with the skills and tools to reach their full potential. Our classes have a maximum of 8 participants, allowing them ample time to refine their skills and develop a positive, growth-oriented mindset..

[Audio] Goal setting is a great strategy for coaches to use, as many studies have found that its integration into a coaching program can lead to significant improvements in performance and behaviour. It is simple to use, making it accessible to all coaches. Therefore, coaches should not hesitate to incorporate it into their coaching program..

It is one of the most common strategies (Larsen, C.H. and Engell, C., 2013.) Integration of goal setting theory shows a significant improvement in performance and behaviour (Carron & Hausenblas, 2005; Weinberg, Butt & Knight, 2001; Weinberg & Gould, 2007)   It is very simple and can be performed by anyone (Larsen, C.H. and Engell, C., 2013.)

[Audio] Football coaching provides an environment for athletes to perform and improve their skills. Psychological skills should be implemented to enable better performance, which means assigning goals during the pre-session brief and setting conditions for these goals to be met. During the session, feedback should be given to the athletes to make sure they are aware of their performance and goals. Post-session brief should also include feedback and review of goals achieved, to motivate players and build a positive atmosphere, thus aiding in better team performance..

How did I implement the psychological skill in my sessions?

Assigning goals during each pre-session brief while I explain the session Making certain conditions to fulfill before they can score points in a session Giving out small tasks during the session Giving feedback during the game to make sure the players are aware of their performance and goals throughout the game.  Giving overall feedback during the post-session brief to let the players know how much they succeeded in fulfilling the goals and improving themselves and motivate them to perform better for next session or game.

[Audio] Setting goals is an essential element of any coaching plan. Evidence from both studies and personal coaching has demonstrated that goal setting has an encouraging effect on practice and performance. When athletes are conscious of the goals they intend to accomplish, they are more apt to put in extra effort in an effort to attain them. This leads to a more efficient and inspiring practice and performance..

How did goal setting influence practice and performance?

Many studies have found out that goal setting can significantly improve the performance in athletes during practice and games.  In my personal coaching experience I can also agree with the same findings. Players perform better than their usual when a goal is introduced to them to achieve.  The players give out more effort to fulfil the task to reach their goal

[Audio] In football coaching, psychological skills are implemented to observe changes in performance. Results show that when players are requested to dribble an opponent before scoring, attempts to do so increase. Additionally, passing accuracy increases when players are requested to pass to a teammate across the field. It was also observed that when players were given the goal of counterattacking within a time limit, the time taken decreased. This same pattern was observed with tackling and defending skills. By setting goals, overall performance is enhanced and helps meet the objectives of the session..

[Audio] Understanding how our players think is essential for creating a motivating environment as coaches. Research from Kyllo and Landers has found that increasing the number of goal-setting studies in sport could lead to more successful outcomes. This is supported by research from Burton, Naylor and others. However, real-world implementation of goal-setting in football is more complex than expected. Thus, this research has revealed more about motivation, such as the presence of personal goals, beliefs and emotions. Additionally, the research demonstrates a discrepancy between the goals of the players and the coaches’ answers, which means a tailored approach is needed for effective goal-setting. Ultimately, the goal-setting process is not always what the goal-setting theory would suggest..

According to the meta-analytical procedures of Kyllo and Landers (1995), and their reviews of Burton(1992, 2002) and Naylor (2002), as the number of goal-setting studies in sports increases they found that goals work and also that the process of effective goal-setting is more complex than it appears.  When compared to the goal-setting heuristic, real-world goal-setting in elite youth football is more difficult. The motivational choices made by the participants as they defined and evaluated discrete goals might be investigated in the context of the social cognitive motivational pillars of personal goals, personal agency beliefs, and affective response. Throughout this process, there was a mismatch between the requirements of the athletes and the answers of the coaches. Finally, the goal-setting process deviated from the goal-setting theory's heuristic. ( Alison Maitland & Misia Gervis, 2010 )

[Audio] Striving to help our athletes reach their fullest potential is a key goal of coaching. To maximize the effectiveness of this process, it is important to understand the goal setting process and to identify the differences in objectives and obstacles that mean more to individual players. While empirical research has started to uncover the nature of the goal-setting process, there is still much to be explored. As the individual needs and personalities of our athletes vary, an adaptive approach to coaching is necessary in order to develop a successful, tailored plan that will enable players to reach their goals..

We now know more about what makes goals more effective because of empirical goal-setting research in sport and fitness, but we still don't know a lot about the goal-setting process, particularly how people set goals. which objectives mean more to certain people, What obstacles stand in the way of achieving goals? and how various personality types vary in how they create goals. ( Weinberg & Gould, 2007 )  Goal setting is a dynamic, ever-evolving, complex process, and to search for new knowledge in a goal-setting process in sports psychology consulting, the approach itself needs to be adaptable. Individual sessions and success are socially formed and created between SPC and players, as players have distinct personalities and problems that should be treated inappropriately at times. (Larsen, C.H. and Engell, C., 2013)

Coaches can utilize goal-setting to motivate and guide athletes, as well as supply performance feedback. This has been supported by studies conducted by Burton, Naylor, Carron, Hausenblas, Kyllo, Landers, Larsen, Maitland, Gervis, Weinberg, Butt and Knight. It is obvious that utilizing goal-setting in sport coaching can support athletes to reach their sporting potential. This presentation has hopefully offered you an understanding of the potency of goal-setting in sport and how it can be employed to instruct athletes.
