Put in place to ensure that production of bread continued  Scientists no longer trusted the bakers’ knowledge People lost trust in the bakers and were outraged by the uneven loaf sizes Merchants became stingy with their yeast so they could increase their prices  The police seized around 2500-3000 loaves of the 4-pound loaves being sold each day  Enough to feed several thousand families

The women of France went to the market to find no bread available They became angry and grabbed weapons to march to the Palace at Versailles  Once the Queen was aware that the people were angry about having no bread, she laughed and said, “Let them eat cake!”  When the group got to the palace, the guards joined them  They took King Louis XVI, Queen Marie Antoinette, and their son to prison

Working people often spent nearly half of their income on bread. In August 1789, however, the price of bread increased dramatically. The people had so much trouble getting bread that they began resorting to desperate measures.
